SPIRITUAL DIARY
My Worship Time Focus: David the realist PT. 2
Bible Reading
& Meditation Reference: 1Kings 2:5-11
Message of the verses: “5
"Now you also know what Joab the son of Zeruiah did to me, what he
did to the two commanders of the armies of Israel, to Abner the son of Ner, and
to Amasa the son of Jether, whom he killed; he also shed the blood of war in
peace. And he put the blood of war on his belt about his waist, and on his
sandals on his feet. 6 "So act
according to your wisdom, and do not let his gray hair go down to Sheol in
peace. 7 "But show kindness to the
sons of Barzillai the Gileadite, and let them be among those who eat at your
table; for they assisted me when I fled from Absalom your brother. 8 "Behold, there is with you Shimei the
son of Gera the Benjamite, of Bahurim; now it was he who cursed me with a
violent curse on the day I went to Mahanaim. But when he came down to me at the
Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD, saying, ’I will not put you to death with
the sword.’ 9 "Now therefore, do
not let him go unpunished, for you are a wise man; and you will know what you
ought to do to him, and you will bring his gray hair down to Sheol with
blood." 10 Then David slept with
his fathers and was buried in the city of David. 11 The days that David reigned over Israel were
forty years: seven years he reigned in Hebron and thirty-three years he reigned
in Jerusalem.”
The
title of this second sub-point under the third main point is “Protect the
kingdom,” and it is advice that David gave to Solomon about certain individuals
from David’s reign who were either worthy of death or worthy of goodness given
to them. Joab, the nephew of David and
head of his army had done some terrible things, killing two men who were much
better than he was and so David gives advice to Solomon on what to do with
him. Barzillai who was from Gilead
brought David many supplies when he was running from Absalom and now David
wishes for he and his family to be blessed by Solomon. Next is the man who cursed David on his way out
of Jerusalem when he was running from Absalom however he meet David, probably
out of fear, when he came back into Jerusalem so David advises this
troublemaker to be dealt with.
Spiritual meaning for my life today: I believe that David was wise in telling
Solomon about these three men and he may have told him about others that are
not recorded here, but I also believe that perhaps David should have taken care
of Joab before his death, but because Joab knew that David had killed Uriah
David may have let him live.
The
last two verses in this section tell of the death of David as he died
peacefully in his bed and then it is told of the years that David had led
Israel. The book of Acts speaks of David
as serving his generation and then dying, but it seems to me, and I got this
point from Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary, that David not only served his generation,
but he served other generations including the one that I am in because it was
through his line that Jesus Christ was born.
David
is a great example from me to follow so that when it comes time from me to
either die or go alive in the rapture to heaven that I will have been a good an
faithful steward and servant of my King.
My Steps of
Faith for Today:
1.
Remember that I am in a battle and in need of the
spiritual armor.
2.
It is especially during these times of troubles that
I have to remember to learn to be content.
