SPIRITUAL DIARY
My Worship Time Focus: Nathan the Loyalists Part 3
Bible Reading
& Meditation Reference: 1Kings 1:38-53
Message of the verses: Today’s SD contains the last sub-point under
the second main point from Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary on 1Kings and is entitled
“The Lord informed Israel.” “38 So Zadok the priest, Nathan the prophet,
Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites, and the Pelethites went down and
had Solomon ride on King David’s mule, and brought him to Gihon. 39 Zadok the priest then took the horn of oil
from the tent and anointed Solomon. Then they blew the trumpet, and all the
people said, "Long live King Solomon!" 40 All the people went up after him, and the
people were playing on flutes and rejoicing with great joy, so that the earth
shook at their noise.
41 ¶ Now Adonijah and all the
guests who were with him heard it as they finished eating. When Joab heard the
sound of the trumpet, he said, "Why is the city making such an
uproar?" 42 While he was still
speaking, behold, Jonathan the son of Abiathar the priest came. Then Adonijah
said, "Come in, for you are a valiant man and bring good news."
43 But Jonathan replied to Adonijah,
"No! Our lord King David has made Solomon king. 44 "The king has also sent with him Zadok
the priest, Nathan the prophet, Benaiah the son of Jehoiada, the Cherethites,
and the Pelethites; and they have made him ride on the king’s mule. 45 "Zadok the priest and Nathan the prophet
have anointed him king in Gihon, and they have come up from there rejoicing, so
that the city is in an uproar. This is the noise which you have heard. 46 "Besides, Solomon has even taken his
seat on the throne of the kingdom. 47
"Moreover, the king’s servants came to bless our lord King David,
saying, ’May your God make the name of Solomon better than your name and his
throne greater than your throne!’ And the king bowed himself on the bed.
48 "The king has also said thus,
’Blessed be the LORD, the God of Israel, who has granted one to sit on my
throne today while my own eyes see it.’" 49 Then all the guests of Adonijah were
terrified; and they arose and each went on his way. 50 And Adonijah was afraid of Solomon, and he
arose, went and took hold of the horns of the altar. 51 Now it was told Solomon, saying,
"Behold, Adonijah is afraid of King Solomon, for behold, he has taken hold
of the horns of the altar, saying, ’Let King Solomon swear to me today that he
will not put his servant to death with the sword.’" 52 Solomon said, "If he is a worthy man,
not one of his hairs will fall to the ground; but if wickedness is found in
him, he will die." 53 So King
Solomon sent, and they brought him down from the altar. And he came and
prostrated himself before King Solomon, and Solomon said to him, "Go to
your house.’”
As
I stated in yesterday’s SD I believe that David took time to pray to the Lord
for guidance on the action that he took and therefore his prayer was answered
by the Lord, for it was the Lord’s choice to have Solomon as the next king in
Israel. The plan that David laid out as
to how to make Solomon the co-ruler with him was fulfilled and was then
reported to Adonijah who became greatly afraid and had to eat some crow for he
had to bow before king Solomon. It is
reported that Adonijah ran to the altar and hung onto the horns of the
altar. This is kind of confusing to me
as to what altar this was so I will quote Dr. Wiersbe to help me take the
mystery out of it: “This was the tent in
Jerusalem, which housed the Ark (1Chron. 16:1, 37). “ And they brought in the
ark of God and placed it inside the tent which David had pitched for it, and
they offered burnt offerings and peace offerings before God.” The tabernacle with the other furnishings was
at Gibeon (1Chron. 16:39-40) “39 He left
Zadok the priest and his relatives the priests before the tabernacle of the
LORD in the high place which was at Gibeon, 40
to offer burnt offerings to the LORD on the altar of burnt offering
continually morning and evening, even according to all that is written in the
law of the LORD, which He commanded Israel.”
There was an altar there and Adonijah took hold of the horns of the
altar which is what people in danger did before the establishment of the six
cities of refuge.”
There
is one more point that I wish to make that comes from an endnote in the first
chapter of Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary on 1Kings and it has to do with David and
when it was that he attended the coronation of Solomon, for there seems to be
some mystery as one looks at a passage in 1Chronicles. 1Chronicles 29:23-25 describe an coordination
for Solomon and in 1 Chronicles 28:1-29:20 David make a great speech at this
event. Dr. Wiersbe points out that it
was unlikely that David got up from his death bed and made those speeches, but
nothing is impossible with God and this could have happened.
Spiritual meaning for my life today: This section shows that no one can stop the
plan of God for no one is as wise as God, for Paul writes that God’s
foolishness is wiser than anyone’s wisdom, so once He told David that Solomon
would take his place as the next ruler that was going to happen. There are times when I see things that happen
that I really don’t like, for instance the man as President of the US is a
wicked man trying to destroy this nation, and yet I have to believe that
whatever happens to this country is in the plan of God. Another thing is the Pastor at our former church
and how he has destroyed that church.
The same thing applies there. God
is on His throne and He is the Supreme Ruler over all the earth and I have the
great privilege of knowing Him as my Father and Lord, for this I am so
thankful.
My Steps of
Faith for Today:
1.
Continue to trust the Lord in these times of
troubles.
2.
Be content because God is on His throne.
3.
Remember that I am in a battle and in need of the
spiritual armor.
