Equipped for service by the Word (2 Tim. 3:17)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9-06-02

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  Equipped for service by the Word

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  2Timothy 3:17

Message of the verse:  “17 so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.”(NAS95).  “17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.”  (KJV).

Verse seventeen continues the thoughts of Paul about the Word of God and tells some of the things it can do when used in the proper way by godly people.  The phrase “man of God” can be talking about a preacher, but Dr. Wiersbe says that it can also be speaking of any Christian becoming a person of God.  I do not think that he is inferring that all believing Christians are persons of God in the way that this verse describes them.

The Word translated perfect in the KJV can mean complete in fit shape, and fit condition.  It does not mean sinless perfection.  It implies fitted for use.  The word furnished means equipped for service and is similar in meaning to the word perfect.  The Word of God furnishes and equips a believer for service.

Meaning for my life today:  As Dr Wiersbe says in his book on this verse, “the better a person knows the Word of God the better we are able to live and work for God.”  I have spent a great deal of my life studying the Word of God and I do believe that it has had a profound effect on my life.  I do want to do better and not only know the Word of God better, but be able to apply it to situations in my life that happen to me on a daily basis.

The Word of God was very informative and instructive to me today.

My Steps of Faith Today:  I need faith to deal with the things that happened last night, as I am sure they will carry over this morning.

Memory verses for the week:  2Timothy 3:16,17

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, throughly equipped for every good work.
