Timothy's Preaching (2 Tim. 4:2b)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 9-10-02

My Worship Time                                                                 Focus: Timothy’s Preaching

Bible Reading & Meditation                                                Reference:  2Timothy 4:2b

Message of the verse:  “-be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with great patience and instruction.”

As Paul has instructed Timothy to preach the Word, he now tells him how he should accomplish this task.  He tell him to be ready to preach the Word, and these words in the Greek picture a soldier going into battle, or a soldier at his guard post ready for a surprise attack.  These situations relate to urgency, preparedness, and readiness.  He tells him to preach the Word in season and out of season, which means that there are times when it will be popular to preach and times it will not, but he is to continue to preach anyway.  He then tells him to reprove and rebuke when he preaches.  This is the negative side of preaching, but at times is surely needed.  And lastly he tells Timothy to exhort with great patience and instruction.  This is the positive of preaching the Word of God.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  As I look at these words “be ready,” I think of a verse in First Peter where he tells his listeners to be ready to give an account of the hope that lies within you.  Peter is saying to be ready to tell others at a moments notice what the Lord Jesus Christ has done for you.  In other words be ready to give your testimony.

The Word of God was uplifting to my soul this morning as I have missed doing this exercise the last two days and my soul was dry and indeed of the Word of God.

My Steps of Faith Today:  I must trust the Lord to get me over to the car dealer this morning without having problems with my IBS.  I trust the Lord to continue to cause me to grow in His Word.

Memory verses for the week:  2Timothy 3:16,17

All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, throughly equipped for every good work.
