Noah's Sin (Gen. 9:20-21)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 04/14/2006

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  Noah’s sin

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Genesis 9:20-21

Message of the verse:  20  Then Noah began farming and planted a vineyard.
21  He drank of the wine and became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent.

Noah’s father Lamech was farmer and son Noah began to farm, for after all his family had to grow food so that they could eat, however this story is not about food, but is about drink.  Some say that it was impossible for wine to be made before the flood, but Dr. Wiersbe does not think that was so, and I am not sure as to whether it was or not, but it does have a great deal to do with whether or not this was sinful on Noah’s part or not so I am going to have to agree with Dr. Wiersbe that it was possible for wine to be made before the flood, even though this was the first time that wine is mentioned in the Scriptures.  At any rate the Bible is speaking about a preacher of righteousness who had too much to drink, then went to sleep naked in his tent because of the effect that the wine had on him and that was sinful.  Even if this was the first time a person could make wine one could tell that they were loosing control of themselves and this was not a good thing to do.

The Bible does not cover over the sins of the OT saints, but has them here for everyone to read about, and Paul tells us in 1Cor. that the reason for this is that the believer can keep from following them, and thus be able to learn from these OT saints sins.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I suppose the obvious thing that I can learn from this is not to get drunk, and that rarely if ever has happened to me since I have become a believer, perhaps this happened soon after I became a believer, but I am not sure when that could have happened. This also teaches me not to sin for sin always has it consequences.  Spurgeon has said that God never allows his children to sin successfully, and that is probably a true statement.

The Word of God has been challenging to my heart as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  It is good to learn not to try and cover my sins, but to confess them to the Lord.  To trust the Lord to teach me contentment and to also lead and direct my path this day, and for me to listen to His as He does this.

Memory verses for the week:              Philippians 2:14-15

14.  Do all things without grumbling and disputing, so that you will prove yourselves blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among who you appear as lights in the world,
