Sustaining Life (Gen. 9:2-4)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 04/10/2006

My Worship Time:                                                                      Focus:  Sustaining life

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  Genesis 9:2-4

            Message of the verse:  “2 ‘The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the sky; with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given.  3 ‘Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, as I gave the green plant.  4 Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, its blood.’”

            God now gives Noah and his family a new diet which now contains the eating of animals, which had not been done until this time.  In verse two God tells Noah that the animals would fear them, and this must have been done so that the animals would not take over the earth by killing off all of the humans, for the animals would multiply faster than the humans and unless they feared man they could kill all of mankind.

            Verse three is the first time in the Bible where God says it is alright to kill and eat animals, however God does say in verse four that the blood must be drained from the animal in order to eat it, and He would later say that the life was in the blood, and therefore God is saying that all life is precious, even the animals, and when a person eats an animal the blood must not be in it.  Later on God would give the Israelites a lot of dietary laws and in the NT times this would change again and Paul would have some things to say about this, just as Jesus did when He was on the earth.

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I can take from this passage that all life is precious to God and therefore I am to respect all life, and this does not mean that I am to keep an animal alive at all costs, but to have it destroyed in a humane way and not allow it to suffer.

The Word of God has been convicting to me as I read and studied it this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  Trust the Lord with the things that will go on in Andrew Lech’s trial today that the Lord will have the justice do the things that will be pleasing to Him, and to continue to trust the Lord to have His way in this test that a lot of us are going through.

Memory verses for the week:  Philippians 2:14-15

4   Do all things without grumbling or disputing;
15  so that you will prove yourselves to be blameless and innocent, children of God above reproach in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you appear as lights in the world,
