SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                              Focus:  Praise the Lord all you people

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Judges 5:1-12

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Then Deborah and Barak the son of Abinoam sang on that day, saying, 2  "That the leaders led in Israel, That the people volunteered, Bless the LORD! 3  "Hear, O kings; give ear, O rulers! I—to the LORD, I will sing, I will sing praise to the LORD, the God of Israel. 4  "LORD, when You went out from Seir, When You marched from the field of Edom, The earth quaked, the heavens also dripped, Even the clouds dripped water. 5  "The mountains quaked at the presence of the LORD, This Sinai, at the presence of the LORD, the God of Israel.
6 ¶  "In the days of Shamgar the son of Anath, In the days of Jael, the highways were deserted, And travelers went by roundabout ways. 7  "The peasantry ceased, they ceased in Israel, Until I, Deborah, arose, Until I arose, a mother in Israel. 8  "New gods were chosen; Then war was in the gates. Not a shield or a spear was seen Among forty thousand in Israel. 9  "My heart goes out to the commanders of Israel, The volunteers among the people; Bless the LORD! 10  "You who ride on white donkeys, You who sit on rich carpets, And you who travel on the road—sing! 11  "At the sound of those who divide flocks among the watering places, There they shall recount the righteous deeds of the LORD, The righteous deeds for His peasantry in Israel. Then the people of the LORD went down to the gates.
12 ¶  "Awake, awake, Deborah; Awake, awake, sing a song! Arise, Barak, and take away your captives, O son of Abinoam.”
This is the last section in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Israel in the third chapter, a chapter where he uses “Acts” from a play to separate the different sections.  This section is the fifth act “A Glorious Celebration” that describes the song that Deborah and Barak sang after the victory over Jabin.  As all songs in the OT they are in Hebrew poetry, and it is good to remember that Hebrew poetry has its own style, as there are recurring themes that are expressed in different ways and can contain outbursts of praise and prayer.
This first section shows the praise to the Lord for this great victory, as the people are encouraged to praise the Lord for what He has done for them.  There is also praise for the things that the Lord had done in the past, like what happened at Mt. Sinai.  In verse nine it shows that God rose up Deborah to be a mother to Israel, as she was judging Israel like a mother.  There is also the mention of the weather which the Lord used to help Israel defeat Jabin.
Israel can now come out of their walled cities because there is now no fear of Jabin and their army for they have been defeated, they can come out to the watering places without fear, and ride on their donkeys without fear.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is a good thing to praise the Lord each and every day of my life, for without the intervention of the Lord in my life I would be receiving what my right is one day and would not like that at all.  Because of the grace and love of the Lord I will live with Him forever, for the Lord Jesus Christ defeated all of the enemies of sin and death and the devil on the cross and for His good pleasure He chose me in eternity past to be a part of His Church and for this I will give praise to the Lord forever and ever.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Trust that the Lord will see my mom through her operation and Bruce Baker through his heart cauterization today and His will will be accomplished.
  2. Trust the Lord to continue to teach me content, and that I would continue to learn contentment.
  3. I need to put on the spiritual armor to be protected in the battle today:  The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.
