Sisera Is Defeated (Judges 4:13-16)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Sisera is defeated

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Judges 4:13-16

Message of the verses:  “13  Sisera called together all his chariots, nine hundred iron chariots, and all the people who were with him, from Harosheth-hagoyim to the river Kishon. 14  Deborah said to Barak, "Arise! For this is the day in which the LORD has given Sisera into your hands; behold, the LORD has gone out before you." So Barak went down from Mount Tabor with ten thousand men following him. 15  The LORD routed Sisera and all his chariots and all his army with the edge of the sword before Barak; and Sisera alighted from his chariot and fled away on foot. 16  But Barak pursued the chariots and the army as far as Harosheth-hagoyim, and all the army of Sisera fell by the edge of the sword; not even one was left.”
Although it is not told in this section how the Lord won the battle for the children of Israel it is told in the next chapter of Judges in verses 20-22:  “20  The stars in the sky joined the fight, from their courses they fought against Sisera. 21  The torrent Kishon swept them away, the torrent attacked them, the torrent Kishon. Oh, you’ll stomp on the necks of the strong! 22  Then the hoofs of the horses pounded, charging, stampeding stallions.”  (Message)  The Kishon is a river and it overflowed in what was probably the dry season, from June through September.  It is worth noting that the Canaanite god of weather is Baal, and also the word “routed” in verse fifteen means to be thrown into confusion, so perhaps Sisera and his army thought that their god had let them down or that the God of Israel was stronger and sent the rain which threw them into confusion.  Their horses and chariots were not much good in the mud, similar to Pharaoh and his army as they too were confused when they tried to go through the Red sea chasing after the children of Israel.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  The Lord will use what ever it takes to work out His plan in the lives of His children, even if at times it seems that there are bad things happening I must realize that God works out all things for my good, and that good I believe is conforming me to the image of Christ, and also for the glory of the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Putting on the spiritual armor by faith in the Lord to win the battles that I face each day.  I put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, and take up the shield of faith, and put on the helmet of salvation, and take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
  2. Continue to learn contentment.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
