SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus: He addresses the people of Israel

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  2Samuel 1:17-20

Message of the verses:  “17 ¶  Then David chanted with this lament over Saul and Jonathan his son, 18  and he told them to teach the sons of Judah the song of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jashar. 19  "Your beauty, O Israel, is slain on your high places! How have the mighty fallen! 20  "Tell it not in Gath, Proclaim it not in the streets of Ashkelon, Or the daughters of the Philistines will rejoice, The daughters of the uncircumcised will exult.”
The second main section in this first chapter of Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on 2Samuel is called “Lamentation” which covers verses 17-27 and it is the lament that David writes for Saul and for Jonathan.  The people of the Middle East are very emotional and this was a customary thing to have done for someone like Saul and Jonathan after their death.
The book of Jasper is also written about in Joshua 10:12-13 where Joshua writes about the day that the Lord gave more daylight hours in order to complete the battle that Israel was fighting.
This first portion of the lament is for the people of Israel as David addresses these people even though he was from the tribe of Judah.  In this lament you can see that David has a love for Saul and for Jonathan even though Saul was trying to kill David on many occasions, which is a very gracious thing for him to do.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I just cannot get away from seeing the respect that David had for the office that Saul had and how he respected Saul even though he was trying to do wrong to David.  Perhaps David knew of the mental problems that Saul had and therefore overlooked the things that he was trying to do to him.  At any rate this is a wonderful trait for David to have and perhaps it is one of the reasons that God says of David that he is a man after God’s own heart.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       Give myself to the Lord for worship and service this day.
2.      Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
3.      Since I am always in a battle I need my spiritual armor on.
4.      Trust that the Lord will continue to teach me contentment, and that I will continue to learn contentment.
5.      Ask the Lord to search my heart for any unhidden sins.
