SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                                              Focus:  Saul lost his life

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  1Sam. 31:2-7, 1Chron. 10:1-6

Message of the verses:  “2  The Philistines overtook Saul and his sons; and the Philistines killed Jonathan and Abinadab and Malchi-shua the sons of Saul. 3  The battle went heavily against Saul, and the archers hit him; and he was badly wounded by the archers. 4  Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and pierce me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised will come and pierce me through and make sport of me." But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. So Saul took his sword and fell on it. 5  When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he also fell on his sword and died with him. 6  Thus Saul died with his three sons, his armor bearer, and all his men on that day together. 7  When the men of Israel who were on the other side of the valley, with those who were beyond the Jordan, saw that the men of Israel had fled and that Saul and his sons were dead, they abandoned the cities and fled; then the Philistines came and lived in them.”
“1 ¶  Now the Philistines fought against Israel; and the men of Israel fled before the Philistines and fell slain on Mount Gilboa. 2  The Philistines closely pursued Saul and his sons, and the Philistines struck down Jonathan, Abinadab and Malchi-shua, the sons of Saul. 3  The battle became heavy against Saul, and the archers overtook him; and he was wounded by the archers. 4  Then Saul said to his armor bearer, "Draw your sword and thrust me through with it, otherwise these uncircumcised will come and abuse me." But his armor bearer would not, for he was greatly afraid. Therefore Saul took his sword and fell on it. 5  When his armor bearer saw that Saul was dead, he likewise fell on his sword and died. 6  Thus Saul died with his three sons, and all those of his house died together.”

Saul becomes one of seven men who commit suicide from the pages of the Bible, and the last one to do so was Judas.  This story is very familiar as the Philistines who have the greater army come after Israel who was not being blessed by the Lord since Saul had chosen to chase David and not build up his army and allow David, who was a man after God’s own heart, to be a big part of Saul’s army.  Now because of all of this Saul and three of his sons die in this battle with the Philistines.  Warren Wiersbe quotes a portion of  1John 5:16 in a way that I would have never though:  “There is sin leading to death.”
The dream that Jonathan had to be a part of David’s reign will never come to pass, and all of this was because of Saul’s sins, just as it was with Eli as all of his family would die because he failed to discipline his sons.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I think that there are far too many times when I do not realize how my sin causes such grief on myself and even on my family.  I realize that I live after the cross of Christ whereas this story took place before the cross of Christ, but sin is still as big of a problem and as I wrote in yesterday’s SD I want to learn to live in the center of that circle of obedience in order to bring glory to the Lord and hopefully when I meet my Lord He will say to me “well done my good and faithful servant.”

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       To live in the center of the circle of God’s love this is obedience.
2.      To give myself to the Lord today for worship and for service.
3.      To be protected in the battle today by the spiritual armor.
4.      To trust the Lord to guide my path.
5.      To trust the Lord to search my heart for hidden sins so that I may confess them to Him.
6.      To trust the Lord to bring about His desire for GBC.
