The Purpose of the Law from 1 Tim. 1:9

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR 02-15-02

My Worship Time                                                            Focus:  Purpose of the Law.

Bible Reading & Meditation                               Reference:  1Timothy 1:9

Message of the verse:  Paul has been talking about these false teachers and how they wanted to be teachers of the law.  The problem with this is that they do not even know what the Law is for or about.  A look at when the Old Testament Law was given will give some insight as to its purpose.  Right after the giving of the Ten Commandments God gave the ceremonial law, which were the instructions of how to offer sacrifices and what the different sacrifices were.  A little more information on these sacrifices is that were a type of Christ and what He would do on the cross.  Getting back to verse nine Paul says that law is not for a righteous person, or a person who thinks he is righteous.  The reason for this is if a person thinks that he is righteous on his on merits by keeping the law then he will not understand that he cannot keep the law and is a sinner.  Paul then gives some terms that describe sinners and they also describe the different offences of the Ten Commandments.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is good to know that I am righteous because I am clothed in the righteousness of Jesus Christ.  The only way that I can keep the commandments is by trusting that God will fill me and control me with His Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit has to reproduce the life of Christ through me.  He must convict me of sin, teach and remind me of the laws that He has placed in my heart.  (See Jeremiah 31:33)

The Word of God was refreshing, a challenge, and convicting to me today.

My Steps of Faith Today:  I do not to want to try and keep the law in and of my own strength.  I think that I need to look at the Old Testament Law in the way that it was intended to be looked at from the time that it was given.

Memory verse for the week:  1John 4:18 There is no fear in love; but perfect love casts out fear, because fear involves torment.  But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.
