The Judgment (Josh. 7:24-26)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                 Focus:  The judgment

Bible Reading & Meditation                                  Reference:  Joshua 7:24-26

Message of the verses:  “24  Then Joshua and all Israel with him, took Achan the son of Zerah, the silver, the mantle, the bar of gold, his sons, his daughters, his oxen, his donkeys, his sheep, his tent and all that belonged to him; and they brought them up to the valley of Achor. 25  Joshua said, "Why have you troubled us? The LORD will trouble you this day." And all Israel stoned them with stones; and they burned them with fire after they had stoned them with stones. 26  They raised over him a great heap of stones that stands to this day, and the LORD turned from the fierceness of His anger. Therefore the name of that place has been called the valley of Achor to this day.”
As I look at these verses and see that not only was Achan killed for the sin that he had committed, but his entire family was also killed, so this leads me to believe that his entire family was involved in this sin.  Deuteronomy 24:16 reads as follows:  “‘Fathers shall not be put to death for their sons, nor shall sons be put to death for their fathers; everyone shall be put to death for his own sin.’”
As I have read through the Bible on a number of occasions I have noticed that there was a pattern that when a new period of Bible history begins that there was someone who would be punished by being killed after breaking command that had been given or some command that they should have known.  Nadad and Abihu were killed after the tabernacle was just finished for not following God’s command.  When David brought the tabernacle up to Jerusalem Uzzah was killed for touching the tabernacle to keep it from falling.  The tabernacle was to be moved by the Levites and carried on polls not on a cart.  Ananias and Sapphira lied to God at the beginning of the Church age and were both killed.  These things all happened, it seems to me, so that others would remember to follow what the Lord had commanded them to follow.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I need to follow the things that the Lord has commanded in His Word because of the great love that was demonstrated for me at the cross.  I am learning to love the Lord with all of my heart, soul, and mind as I walk with Him and therefore I do not want to disappoint Him by breaking His commands.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Put on my Spiritual Armor.
  2. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  3. Continue to learn contentment.
  4. Ask the Holy Spirit to search my heart for hidden sins.
  5. Trust the Lord to guide my path.
  6. Set my mind on things above, not on earthly things.
