The Word of Promise (Josh. 8:1c)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The Word of Promise

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Joshua 8:1c

Message of the verse:  “1 Now the LORD said to Joshua, "Do not fear or be dismayed. Take all the people of war with you and arise, go up to Ai; see, I have given into your hand the king of Ai, his people, his city, and his land.”
These are the same words that the Lord spoke to Joshua in chapter six and verse two when they were about to go into Jericho.  After this sin of Achan I believe that Joshua needed to here these words from the Lord because of the defeat that they had suffered at Ai before.  The victory for Israel over Jericho was easy because they really did not have to fight that much because the Lord was the One who knocked down the walls so that all the children of Israel had to do was to go in and kill those that the walls did not kill.  It was probably because of this that presumption set in when they went up to fight against Ai and so they did not ask the Lord what it was that they should do and therefore because of the sin and because they did not ask the Lord they were defeated.
The promises of God must be mixed with faith if they are to accomplish the desired results.  “For indeed we have had good news preached to us, just as they also; but the word they heard did not profit them, because it was not united by faith in those who heard.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Warren Wiersbe points out in his commentary on Joshua that believers are to read their Bibles in order to have the Sword of the Spirit in their hands and minds, which according to Ephesians 6:17 is the Word of God, then we are ready to begin our day and be involved in the battle which seems to be happening every day of the believers life in either small or large ways.  When those large battle come it is important to have a good understanding of the Word of God.
There have been times in my life when I have had presumption and have truly thought that this or that was what the Lord wanted me to do and like Joshua did not pray about it and fell flat on my face which caused a lot of problems.  I need to remember to confess my sin at that time and also to remember that God is a God of new beginnings so I need to get up dust myself off and get back into the battle seeking what it is that the Lord wants me to do.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. I want to remember to put on the Spiritual armor today to be ready for the battle.
  2. I want to seek the Lord to guide my path and not set out on my own like a lost sheep does.
  3. Continue to learn contentment.

Memory verse for the week:                                   Zephaniah 3:17

"The LORD your God is in your midst, A victorious warrior.
He will exult over you with joy, He will be quiet in His love,
He will rejoice over you with shouts of joy.”
