SPIRITUAL
DIARY
My Worship Time Focus: Abigail’s wise plan
Bible Reading
& Meditation Reference: 1Samuel 25:14-19
Message
of the verses: “14 Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s servants went to
Abigail and told her, “David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our
master, but he screamed insults at them. 15
These men have been very good to us, and we never suffered any harm from
them. Nothing was stolen from us the whole time they were with us. 16 In fact, day and night they were like a wall
of protection to us and the sheep. 17
You need to know this and figure out what to do, for there is going to
be trouble for our master and his whole family. He’s so ill-tempered that no
one can even talk to him!’’
“18 ¶
Abigail wasted no time. She quickly gathered 200 loaves of bread, two
wineskins full of wine, five sheep that had been slaughtered, nearly a bushel
of roasted grain, 100 clusters of raisins, and 200 fig cakes. She packed them
on donkeys 19 and said to her servants,
“Go on ahead. I will follow you shortly.’’ But she didn’t tell her husband
Nabal what she was doing.”
In today’s SD the third of four
different kinds of people are seen who are involved in the life of David and
this one will soon become his wife.
Warren Wiersbe entitles this section “David takes a wife,” and of course
that wife is the wise and beautiful Abigail.
Nabal not only had a wise wife but
he had a wise servant who did not go to him but to his wife to explain to her
what he had done to David’s men. This
servant whether he realized it or not was doing the will of the Lord. He explains to Abigail the whole situation of
David’s men coming to see Nabal, and how he treated them, and also he told her
of how David and his men treated them, even protecting them from harm while
they were in the field. Abigail gets the
message and begins to prepare food for David and his men and heads out to meet
David.
If David would have done what he had
so hastily planned, that is kill all these people then Saul would have had the
right idea about him and could have perused him with good reasons, but as said
in yesterday’s SD since God was not ruling in David’s life He was overruling in
his life.
My
Steps of faith for today: There are
times in my life, far too many, that I have not stopped to listen to the Lord
through His Word or through others or even through that still small voice and
have acted foolishly just as David was about to in this chapter of the
Bible. I would imagine that the Lord has
had to overrule in my life on some of these occasions too. My lesson and step of faith for today is not
to have this happen in my life as much or at all for the rest of my life, but
to stop and think, and get some sound advice from wise people, and seek the
Lord to lead me all the way.
My Steps of
Faith for Today:
1.
Trust in the
LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding. In all thy
ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
2.
10 ¶ Finally,
be strong in the Lord and in the strength of His might. 11 Put on the full armor of God, so that you
will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil. 12 For our struggle is not against flesh and
blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of
this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly
places. 13 Therefore, take up the full
armor of God, so that you will be able to resist in the evil day, and having
done everything, to stand firm. 14 Stand
firm therefore, HAVING GIRDED YOUR LOINS WITH TRUTH, and HAVING PUT ON THE
BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS, 15 and
having shod YOUR FEET WITH THE PREPARATION OF THE GOSPEL OF PEACE; 16 in addition to all, taking up the shield of
faith with which you will be able to extinguish all the flaming arrows of the
evil one. 17 And take THE HELMET OF
SALVATION, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God. 18 With all prayer and petition pray at all
times in the Spirit, and with this in view, be on the alert with all
perseverance and petition for all the saints,
3.
Actually, I don’t have a sense of needing anything
personally. I’ve learned by now to be quite content whatever my circumstances.
