Audacity (1 Samuel 26:5-12)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Audacity

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  1Samuel 26:5-12

            Message of the verses:  “5  David then arose and came to the place where Saul had camped. And David saw the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the commander of his army; and Saul was lying in the circle of the camp, and the people were camped around him.
    “6 ¶  Then David said to Ahimelech the Hittite and to Abishai the son of Zeruiah, Joab’s brother, saying, "Who will go down with me to Saul in the camp?" And Abishai said, "I will go down with you." 7  So David and Abishai came to the people by night, and behold, Saul lay sleeping inside the circle of the camp with his spear stuck in the ground at his head; and Abner and the people were lying around him. 8  Then Abishai said to David, "Today God has delivered your enemy into your hand; now therefore, please let me strike him with the spear to the ground with one stroke, and I will not strike him the second time." 9  But David said to Abishai, "Do not destroy him, for who can stretch out his hand against the LORD’S anointed and be without guilt?" 10  David also said, "As the LORD lives, surely the LORD will strike him, or his day will come that he dies, or he will go down into battle and perish. 11  "The LORD forbid that I should stretch out my hand against the LORD’S anointed; but now please take the spear that is at his head and the jug of water, and let us go." 12  So David took the spear and the jug of water from beside Saul’s head, and they went away, but no one saw or knew it, nor did any awake, for they were all asleep, because a sound sleep from the LORD had fallen on them.”

            As mentioned in yesterday’s SD I can’t help but think of the commentary from Warren Wiersbe on how David had grown in character from the Lord striking Nabal when at first he wanted to kill him but was stopped by Abigail from doing it.  He is now faced with a similar situation and chooses to again allow the Lord to take care of the death of Saul and not go against the Lord’s anointed by killing him.  David respected the office and the God who put Saul into the office of king and therefore would not do anything to alter this.
            This is the first mention of Abishai in the Scripture who was the nephew of David, the son of his sister. Abner was the cousin of Saul and his military captain.  “Abishai, Ashel, and Joab were sons of David’s sister Zeruiah (1Chron. 2:16) and nephew of David.  Saul’s captain Abner killed Asahel, and Joab and Abishai chased him and killed him, mush to David’s sorrow (2Samuel 2-3).  Abishai became one of David’s best military leaders and saved David’s life when he was attacked by a giant (@Samuel 21:15-17).”  (Note from Dr. Wiersbe’s commentary on 1Samuel.)

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  As mentioned in earlier SD’s there are two men in my life who are leaders of whom my respect for them is not great to say the least,  one who is our President and the other who is our Pastor.  I must continue to respect both offices because they are both ordained by the Lord.
            There is a prayer meeting going on in our church on Monday’s to pray about the turmoil that is going on there and therefore I believe that this is the right thing to do, for by doing this we are petitioning the Lord to bring about His will for Grace Baptist Church which is the most important thing that could happen.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       Trust the Lord to guide my path this day.
2.      Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
3.      Continue to learn contentment.
4.      Put on the whole spiritual armor because life is a battle against unseen forces of evil, but I have a great and powerful God.  I put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness and the shoes of the gospel of peace, I take up the shield of faith in order to stop the flaming missiles that the enemy shoots at me, I put on the helmet of salvation, and take up the Sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
5.      I want to continue to pray for the men of our Tuesday “Battles” group.  For Josh that he will get to bed early so he will be refreshed the next day.  For Dave that he will not go against what the Lord has for him, but submit to his will.  For Andy who is thinking about going into counseling the youth, for Bruce and I as we struggle with what is going on at church, and for Sandy and my decision about Hawaii.  For John as the Lord leads him into what is going on in our group.

Memory verses for the week:                                        1Thes. 4:1-5

1 ¶  Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more.
2  For you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3  For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality;
4  that each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
5  not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God;
