SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                          Focus:  David looses a friend

Bible Reading & Meditation                         Reference:  1 Samuel 25:1

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Now Samuel died, and all Israel gathered for his funeral. They buried him at his house in Ramah. Then David moved down to the wilderness of Maon.”

This SD begins a new chapter in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on 1 Samuel and he entitles this chapter (Ten) “A WISE WOMAN AND A FOOLISH KING.”  There are four main divisions in this chapter and Wiersbe writes the following at the beginning of his chapter with these words, “These two chapter record four events that reveal David’s involvement with four different kinds of people.”  The first person is the prophet Samuel who has just died, but it is doubtful that David attended the funeral of Samuel because of Saul’s spies would be there.  It is also doubtful that Saul attended the funeral of Samuel, for Saul was upset with Samuel over past confrontations with him.
Samuel was a humble man and wanted to be buried in his hometown while according to 1 Samuel 15:12 Saul had set up a monument for himself at Carmel.  I suppose that it was the order of the day that these people were living in and the place where they were living in that would cause Saul to do such a thing, but this was not the case with Samuel.
The verse says that all Israel gathered for his funeral, but probably just the leaders of the tribes came to the funeral.  Samuel was the man whom God had used to help set up the monarchy in Israel and was their last Judge along with being a prophet, so Samuel surely would be missed.
The last sentence in this verse speaks of David moving to the wilderness of Maon, which is the word used in some translations and has it in the NLT, which I used for this SD because the NASB95 uses the word Paran, and according to the commentary of Warren Wiersbe that was some 100 miles away and the next event in the life of David is with a man who lived in Maon so he believes that Maon was the place where David went.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  In the beginning of his commentary on this chapter Dr. Wiersbe writes something that caught my attention and so I want to use it for this section of my Spiritual Diary today:  “But you can’t leave God out of the picture!  After all, He’s the one who writes the script for us, chooses the cast, and puts us into the scenes He’s planned for us.  If we follow His directions, life becomes the satisfying fulfillment of His will, but if we rebel, the plot turns into tragedy.”  This is one of the goals in my life, and that is to have God in all of the decisions that I make so He can lead my life in the direction He wants it to go.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       Put on the Spiritual Armor in order to stand firm against the wiles of the wicked one and his army of evilness.  I put on the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, I take up the shield of faith, and put on the helmet of salvation, and take up the Sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God.  Prayer is also part of the Spiritual Armor.
2.      Trust the Lord will guide my path as Proverbs 3:5-6 speak of.
3.      Trust the Lord will continue to teach me and that I will continue to learn contentment.
4.      Give myself to the Lord today for worship and for service.
5.      Continue to memorize Scriptures that help me in the battles and the temptations that I face each day.

Memory verses for the week:                                                    1Thes. 4:2-4

2. For we know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.
3.  For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4. That each of you know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor,
