David's Mockery of Saul from 1 Samuel 26:13-16

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                                      Focus:  Mockery

Bible Reading & Meditation                                     Reference:  1Samuel 26:13-16

Message of the verses:  “13 ¶  Then David crossed over to the other side and stood on top of the mountain at a distance with a large area between them. 14  David called to the people and to Abner the son of Ner, saying, "Will you not answer, Abner?" Then Abner replied, "Who are you who calls to the king?" 15  So David said to Abner, "Are you not a man? And who is like you in Israel? Why then have you not guarded your lord the king? For one of the people came to destroy the king your lord. 16  "This thing that you have done is not good. As the LORD lives, all of you must surely die, because you did not guard your lord, the LORD’S anointed. And now, see where the king’s spear is and the jug of water that was at his head.’”

Warren Wiersbe calls this sub-section “mockery,” and that is a good name for this section of Scripture, for David was surely mocking those who were to guard the king, especially Abner.  He goes on to tell Abner that he should surely die, for he was sleeping on the job and not protecting the king.  He then asks Abner about the jug of water and the king’s spear.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I have been looking at how David treated Saul, the king of Israel, the Lord’s anointed one to lead Israel with two people, our President, and our Pastor, and I have been learning that I am to respect the office that these two hold because the Lord has put them in charge for His own purposes, but the fact is that my respect for these two men is not what is was for our former President or former Pastor.  One of the things that I have learned and am still trying to obey what I have learned is to let the Lord take care of these two men in the way that He will, and not to try and do anything that would cause me to sin in doing something wrong concerning them.  This is a hard lesson for me to practice and I surely had trouble last evening in talking with a young man about things that I should not have spoken to him about and this bothers me because I believe it was sin and sin against the Lord and so I confessed my sin to the Lord, but still feel badly about it.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

1.       1John 1:9 is my step of faith for today:  “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”

Memory verses for the week:                                        1Thes. 4:1-5

1 Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please God (just as you do walk), that you excel still more. 2 for you know what commandments we gave you by the authority of the Lord Jesus.  3 For this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from sexual immorality; 4.  That each of you know how to possess his won vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in sexual passion, like the Gentiles who do not know God.     7/22/2010 8:06:02 AM
