My Worship Time Focus: His request for a city
Bible Reading
& Meditation Reference: 1Samuel 27:3-7
Message
of the verses: “3 And David lived with Achish at Gath, he and
his men, each with his household, even David with his two wives, Ahinoam the
Jezreelitess, and Abigail the Carmelitess, Nabal’s widow. 4 Now it was told Saul that David had fled to
Gath, so he no longer searched for him. 5
Then David said to Achish, "If now I have found favor in your
sight, let them give me a place in one of the cities in the country, that I may
live there; for why should your servant live in the royal city with you?"
6 So Achish gave him Ziklag that day;
therefore Ziklag has belonged to the kings of Judah to this day. 7 The number of days that David lived in the
country of the Philistines was a year and four months.”
This SD begins the second main point
in chapter eleven of Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on 1Samuel, and he entitles it
“Deceiving the enemy.” David deceived
Achish over three things, his request for a city, his reports over the raids he
went out on, and his responsibility in the upcoming battle with Israel and the
Philistines, for David was now living with the Philistines.
David was scheming, and this is a
lot of which this chapter in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary is about for he writes
the following, “faith is living without scheming.” David lived among the Philistines for a year
and four months, and so David must have thought it wise to get out from the
main city where Achish was living and so he very humbly asked him for a city
and Achish gave him the city of Ziklag, a city that was in the territory of
Simenon but controlled by the Philistines.
David was an enemy of Saul and the
Philistines must have heard of this and that is probably why Achish welcomed
David and his group of people which was probably between 2000-3000 in
total. At any rate there was a great
many people with David which would make it difficult for Achish to feed and
give water to, so it was better for him if they moved out, and this way David
had the opportunity to do what he wanted without the watchful eye of Achish.
Spiritual
meaning for my life today: I truly
believe that David did all of this without the counsel of the Lord and as I
have quoted before from Warren Wiersbe, “when God is not allowed to rule in
your life he overrules.” God had a great
plan for David and He has a great plan for me, and that is what I want to be
involved in, the plan He has for me so I must allow Him to rule in my life and
not overrule whenever I sin and get away from the plan He has for my life.
My Steps of
Faith for today:
1.
Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
2.
Put on the spiritual armor.
3.
Continue to learn contentment.
4.
Trust the Lord to be the One who decides whether or
not I am to go to Hawaii to work.
Memory verses for the week: 1Thes.
4:1-5
1 ¶
Finally then, brethren, we request and exhort you in the Lord Jesus,
that as you received from us instruction as to how you ought to walk and please
God (just as you actually do walk), that you excel still more. 2 For you know what commandments we gave you by
the authority of the Lord Jesus. 3 For
this is the will of God, your sanctification; that is, that you abstain from
sexual immorality; 4 that each of you
know how to possess his own vessel in sanctification and honor, 5 not in lustful passion, like the Gentiles who
do not know God;
