The Complacent Church (Rev. 3:3)

SPIRITUAL DIARY FOR

03/11/2005

My Worship Time                  Focus:  The complacent church

Bible Reading & Meditation             Reference:  Revelations 3:3

Message of the verse:  “So remember what you have received and heard; and keep it, and repent. Therefore if you do not wake up, I will come like a thief, and you will not know at what hour I will come to you.”  (NAS95)  Go back to what you heard and believed at first; hold to it firmly and turn to me again. Unless you do, I will come upon you suddenly, as unexpected as a thief.  (NLT)

I would suppose that this church was the hardest one to understand of all of the seven churches.  This letter does not contain the things that the others do, as there are no words concerning what they were doing right or wrong, but there are words that explain what they should be doing.  The church seemed to be standing on its past reputation and had little effect on the people around them so Christ tells them to remember where they came from, to go back to what happened when they first began, and to repent for falling into the place that they were in right now.  I guess the best word to describe this church is complacent.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  It is not a good thing to be complacent with my faith, for if I am not moving forward then I am moving backwards, for there is no neutral in my walk with the Lord.  The enemy would like me to think that there is a neutral, but there is not.  Each day brings new challenges and new opportunities to do the work of the Lord and I need to have my eyes open to see them and my ears open to hear what they are.

The Word of God was convicting and challenging to my heart as I read them this morning.

My Steps of Faith Today:  Trust in the Lord with all of my heart and lean not upon my own understanding, in all of my ways acknowledge Him and He shall direct my path.
