Desiring a King (Deu. 17:14)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Desiring a king

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deut. 17:14

Message of the verses:  14 ¶  "When you enter the land which the LORD your God gives you, and you possess it and live in it, and you say, ‘I will set a king over me like all the nations who are around me,’”

I do not wish to take this verse out of context however there are some things in this verse that will pertain to what will happen to Israel down the road that need to be discussed.  If you read this paragraph from Deut.17 it explains how Israel was to go about choosing a king, but in fact when they did chose a king they did not chose the right king but chose a king that they desired to have.  As far as them choosing a king they were saying to God we don’t want You to rule over us anymore and we want to be like the nations around us, so God give us a king.  God did give them a king who looked like the kind of king that someone with the world’s wisdom would choose and of course Saul was the wrong choice, but God did chose David and he was the right choice.  Reading in 1 Cor. 2 this morning Paul is writing about godly wisdom and godly wisdom is not like worldly wisdom at all, in fact Paul writes that this wisdom was actually hidden in ages past but is now revealed in this the Church age.  This chapter in 1 Cor. and verse fourteen of Deuteronomy the way that I am looking at it this morning go together, for the Cor. passage helps to explain the verse in Deut.  God is so wonderful to have me read the two on the same day.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Godly wisdom is a wonderful thing to have and it is something that is surely needed in my walk with the Lord each day.  I wish to go ahead and copy and paste the 2nd chapter of 1 Cor. in this place of my SD for today just for a reminder of how wonderful godly wisdom is:  “1 ¶  And when I came to you, brethren, I did not come with superiority of speech or of wisdom, proclaiming to you the testimony of God. 2  For I determined to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ, and Him crucified. 3  I was with you in weakness and in fear and in much trembling, 4  and my message and my preaching were not in persuasive words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, 5  so that your faith would not rest on the wisdom of men, but on the power of God.

6 ¶  Yet we do speak wisdom among those who are mature; a wisdom, however, not of this age nor of the rulers of this age, who are passing away; 7  but we speak God’s wisdom in a mystery, the hidden wisdom which God predestined before the ages to our glory; 8  the wisdom which none of the rulers of this age has understood; for if they had understood it they would not have crucified the Lord of glory; 9  but just as it is written, "THINGS WHICH EYE HAS NOT SEEN AND EAR HAS NOT HEARD, AND which HAVE NOT ENTERED THE HEART OF MAN, ALL THAT GOD HAS PREPARED FOR THOSE WHO LOVE HIM." 10  For to us God revealed them through the Spirit; for the Spirit searches all things, even the depths of God. 11  For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God. 12  Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things freely given to us by God, 13  which things we also speak, not in words taught by human wisdom, but in those taught by the Spirit, combining spiritual thoughts with spiritual words. 14  But a natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; and he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually appraised. 15  But he who is spiritual appraises all things, yet he himself is appraised by no one. 16  For WHO HAS KNOWN THE MIND OF THE LORD, THAT HE WILL INSTRUCT HIM? But we have the mind of Christ.”

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  2. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  3. Continue to learn contentment.
  4. Seek God’s wisdom for my life today.

Memory verses for the week:                                              1 John 2:15-17

15.  15  Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16  For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. 17  The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.
