SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Qualifications for a king

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deut. 17:15-17

Message of the verses:  “15  you shall surely set a king over you whom the LORD your God chooses, one from among your countrymen you shall set as king over yourselves; you may not put a foreigner over yourselves who is not your countryman. 16  "Moreover, he shall not multiply horses for himself, nor shall he cause the people to return to Egypt to multiply horses, since the LORD has said to you, ‘You shall never again return that way.’ 17  "He shall not multiply wives for himself, or else his heart will turn away; nor shall he greatly increase silver and gold for himself.”

God was the One who was to choose a king for the children of Israel and the king must be from the nation of Israel.  The king was not to have multiple wives, nor to have a lot of horses or go down to Egypt to get those horses, and he shall not be greatly rich.

God gave the first king to the nation of Israel because they were rejecting God to rule over them and that first king was Saul who was from the tribe of Benjamin, and the tribe of Benjamin was not the royal tribe as Jacob told his sons on his death bed, for Judah was the royal tribe, the tribe the Messiah would come out of.  God did choose David as king and he came from the tribe of Judah and the Lord Jesus Christ was born after the seed of David.

David’s son Solomon broke the commands that are in this section of Scripture as he had many wives so that meant that he had trust in the foreign governments where these women came from, he had much money so he trusted in his riches, and he had many horses and some of them came from Egypt so he trusted in his army and not in the Lord.  Even though the kingdom looked good from the outside during the reign of Solomon it was crumbling from the inside and would be split after Solomon died.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I think that the main thing that I can learn from this SD today is to follow the commands that God has laid out in His Word and to trust the Lord completely and not put my trust in riches of other gifts that God has given to me as the Giver of all gifts.  God has a desire for me to trust Him and Him alone for that is how I was saved putting all of my faith and trust in the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross alone for my salvation and not trusting anything else for it.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Trust the Lord to give all of us a wonderful time on our retreat and trust the Lord to teach us wonderful things as we study His Word while there.
  2. Continue to learn contentment.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  4. Trust the Lord to show me His wisdom way.
  5. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.

Memory verses for the week:                                  1 John 2:15-17, 1 Cor. 1:30-31

1 John Verses:

15.    Do not love the world nor the things in the world.  If anyone loves the world the love of the Father is not in him.

16.    For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world.

17.    The world is passing away, and all its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.

1 Cor. Verses:

30. But by His doing you are in Christ Jesus, who became to us wisdom from God, and righteousness and sanctification, and redemption,

31  so that, just as it is written, "LET HIM WHO BOASTS, BOAST IN THE LORD."
