SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                              Focus:  God’s blessing for the tribes

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Deuteronomy 33:6-25

Message of the verses:  “6 ¶  "May Reuben live and not die, Nor his men be few." 7  And this regarding Judah; so he said, "Hear, O LORD, the voice of Judah, And bring him to his people. With his hands he contended for them, And may You be a help against his adversaries."

8 ¶  Of Levi he said, "Let Your Thummim and Your Urim belong to Your godly man, Whom You proved at Massah, With whom You contended at the waters of Meribah; 9  Who said of his father and his mother, ‘I did not consider them’; And he did not acknowledge his brothers, Nor did he regard his own sons, For they observed Your word, And kept Your covenant. 10  "They shall teach Your ordinances to Jacob, And Your law to Israel. They shall put incense before You, And whole burnt offerings on Your altar. 11  "O LORD, bless his substance, And accept the work of his hands; Shatter the loins of those who rise up against him, And those who hate him, so that they will not rise again."

12 ¶  Of Benjamin he said, "May the beloved of the LORD dwell in security by Him, Who shields him all the day, And he dwells between His shoulders." 13  Of Joseph he said, "Blessed of the LORD be his land, With the choice things of heaven, with the dew, And from the deep lying beneath, 14  And with the choice yield of the sun, And with the choice produce of the months. 15  "And with the best things of the ancient mountains, And with the choice things of the everlasting hills, 16  And with the choice things of the earth and its fullness, And the favor of Him who dwelt in the bush. Let it come to the head of Joseph, And to the crown of the head of the one distinguished among his brothers. 17  "As the firstborn of his ox, majesty is his, And his horns are the horns of the wild ox; With them he will push the peoples, All at once, to the ends of the earth. And those are the ten thousands of Ephraim, And those are the thousands of Manasseh."

18 ¶  Of Zebulun he said, "Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going forth, And, Issachar, in your tents. 19  "They will call peoples to the mountain; There they will offer righteous sacrifices; For they will draw out the abundance of the seas, And the hidden treasures of the sand." 20  Of Gad he said, "Blessed is the one who enlarges Gad; He lies down as a lion, And tears the arm, also the crown of the head. 21  "Then he provided the first part for himself, For there the ruler’s portion was reserved; And he came with the leaders of the people; He executed the justice of the LORD, And His ordinances with Israel."

22 ¶  Of Dan he said, "Dan is a lion’s whelp, That leaps forth from Bashan." 23  Of Naphtali he said, "O Naphtali, satisfied with favor, And full of the blessing of the LORD, Take possession of the sea and the south." 24  Of Asher he said, "More blessed than sons is Asher; May he be favored by his brothers, And may he dip his foot in oil. 25  "Your locks will be iron and bronze, And according to your days, so will your leisurely walk be.”

It was noted by Warren Wiersbe that the mention of Simeon is not in this list, for that tribe eventually mixed in with the tribe of Judah.

Here is the order of the tribes that are mentioned in this section:

                        Reuben, Judah, Levi—sons of Leah

                        Benjamin, Joseph—sons of Rachel

                        Ephraim, Manasseh—sons of Joseph

                        Zebulun, Issachar—sons of Leah

                        Gad—son of Zilpah

                        Dan, Naphtali—sons of Bilhah

                        Asher—son of Zilpah

In this long section the Lord through Moses writes something about all of these tribes of Israel and I will not write commentary on all of these, but some of them I will chose to write something about.

Reuben was Israel’s first born, yet he slept with one of Jacobs wives, one of the handmaids that came with Jacob and his wives when they left Laban’s house and traveled to what would be where the nation of Israel would eventually live.  In 1 Chron. 5:1-2 it reads as follows:  “1 ¶  Now the sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel (for he was the firstborn, but because he defiled his father’s bed, his birthright was given to the sons of Joseph the son of Israel; so that he is not enrolled in the genealogy according to the birthright. 2  Though Judah prevailed over his brothers, and from him came the leader, yet the birthright belonged to Joseph).”

Judah was not only the royal tribe, where the Messiah would come from, but was also a military tribe and marched at the front of the army.

Simeon and Levi were the ones who avenged their sister Dinah’s being rapped by killing all the men of Shechem and so as Jacob was pronouncing the blessings of each of his sons right before he died he said that both Simeon and Levi would be blended into the other tribes and so Simeon became part of the tribe of Judah and Levi became the priestly tribe and lived all over the nation of Israel performing these duties.

I have taken the time to copy and past Warren Wiersbe’s total commentary on this section and have saved it on my E drive under Spiritual Diaries/2009 Spiritual Diaries/July.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Be sure your sin will find you out is written in the Proverbs and when it comes to the tribes of Israel and some of the sins of the fathers they were truly seen in their children and grandchildren and so on down the line.  I am sure that not all of these people in these tribes were great sinners for in the book of Revelations there are twelve thousand from twelve of the tribes who will go out and preach the Gospel during the time of the tribulation.  It has always be kind of a mystery to me as to why all of these things happened, but when it comes to the things that I don’t understand in the Scriptures I trust the Lord for He cannot make any mistakes.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  2. Put on the spiritual armor:  The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit.
  3. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  4. Continue to learn contentment.
  5. Keep a short list of sins between the Lord and me and seek the Holy Spirit to search my heart for hidden sins.
