Entering the Assembly (Deut. 23:1-8; 25:19)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Entering the assembly

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Deu. 23:1-8; 25:19

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  "No one who is emasculated or has his male organ cut off shall enter the assembly of the LORD. 2  "No one of illegitimate birth shall enter the assembly of the LORD; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall enter the assembly of the LORD. 3  "No Ammonite or Moabite shall enter the assembly of the LORD; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, shall ever enter the assembly of the LORD, 4  because they did not meet you with food and water on the way when you came out of Egypt, and because they hired against you Balaam the son of Beor from Pethor of Mesopotamia, to curse you. 5  "Nevertheless, the LORD your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, but the LORD your God turned the curse into a blessing for you because the LORD your God loves you. 6  "You shall never seek their peace or their prosperity all your days. 7  "You shall not detest an Edomite, for he is your brother; you shall not detest an Egyptian, because you were an alien in his land. 8  "The sons of the third generation who are born to them may enter the assembly of the LORD.

“19  "Therefore it shall come about when the LORD your God has given you rest from all your surrounding enemies, in the land which the LORD your God gives you as an inheritance to possess, you shall blot out the memory of Amalek from under heaven; you must not forget.”

This sub-section begins a new section in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Exodus which is entitled “Various Laws.”

The first thing that I want to say as my commentary on this section is a quote from Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Deuteronomy, “The Lord has the right to determine who shall enter His holy nation.”  With that been said I will move into those who were disqualified from entering the assembly of the Lord.  First there was those who were Eunuchs, and some were that way because of an accident and others were that way because of heathen practices.  Isaiah speaks of this in his book saying that there would be a day when they would be allowed to enter the Assembly of God:  “3 ¶  Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the LORD say, "The LORD will surely separate me from His people." Nor let the eunuch say, "Behold, I am a dry tree." 4  For thus says the LORD, "To the eunuchs who keep My sabbaths, And choose what pleases Me, And hold fast My covenant, 5  To them I will give in My house and within My walls a memorial, And a name better than that of sons and daughters; I will give them an everlasting name which will not be cut off.”  Actually Isaiah was speaking of a lot of different types of people and some are mentioned in this section of Deuteronomy, however this is will be a whole different dispensation, but anyone who has trusted the Lord by faith, putting all of their trust in Him to save them from their sins whether in the OT or NT times will be saved.

Moses goes on to speak of different types or nations of people who would not be allowed to go into the Assembly of the Lord and some of then would have to wait for ten generations, which Warren Wiersbe said was for a lifetime.

In Deuteronomy 25:17-19 Moses speaks of the Amalekites not ever being able to go into the Assembly of the Lord as Israel was to destroy them completely.  Israel failed to do this and even their first king, Saul, failed to follow the Lord’s command to destroy them completely and lost his kingdom because of not following this command and was even killed by an Amalekite (2 Samuel 1:1-16).  In 1 Chron. 4:41-43 it records that Hezekiah finally destroyed the Amalekites and they were not heard from after that.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  As I look at this section there are a couple of things that come to my mind.  First I want to praise the Lord for His Sovereign grace in choosing me to be a part of His Kingdom and for the perfect sacrifice that His Son made for me on the cross of Calvary.  Second, if not for this marvelous grace I too would be named with people like mentioned in this section of not being allowed to enter the Assembly of God.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  2. Put on the Spiritual armor:  the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,
  3. Continue to learn contentment.
  4. Trust the Lord to guide my steps and keep me from sin today.
  5. Keep a short list with the Lord and have His Holy Spirit search my heart.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 3:14-18

14.  For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

15.  from whom every family in heaven and on the earth derives its name,

16.  that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,

17.  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and you being rooted and grounded in love,

18.  may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
