SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The firstborn son

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deut. 21:15-17

Message of the verses:  “15 ¶  If a man have two wives, one beloved, and another hated, and they have born him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the firstborn son be hers that was hated: 16  Then it shall be, when he maketh his sons to inherit that which he hath, that he may not make the son of the beloved firstborn before the son of the hated, which is indeed the firstborn: 17  But he shall acknowledge the son of the hated for the firstborn, by giving him a double portion of all that he hath: for he is the beginning of his strength; the right of the firstborn is his.”

This SD begins a new chapter in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Deuteronomy, and he has entitled the chapter “Disputes and Decisions.”  Here is what he has written at the beginning of this chapter:  “The major emphasis in these chapters is on how the law of the Lord governed relationships in the nation of Israel.  The material is so varied that perhaps the best way to study what Moses said is to arrange it in general categories.”  The first category is entitled “Protecting the family,” and today’s SD is on the firstborn son.

The Lord has always meant for marriage to between one man and one woman and to last for a lifetime.   Two things have stopped this from happening and they are having more than one wife and divorce, neither did God desire to happen.  Jacob had more than one wife and because of this it caused a lot of trouble for his family; however God accomplished what He desired to happen through Jacob’s family troubles.

Dr. Wiersbe has pointed out in a number of his writings that the second born was usually the one who was blessed, and this is a picture of the second birth of a person who is a child of God, for the first birth was into this world, while the second birth was the one that a person receives eternal life.

In these verses the law is that if a man has more than one wife and he loves one and does not love the other, however his firstborn son comes from the wife that he does not love then that son will receive a double blessing.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I can seen in my own life that God has worked through mistakes that I have made to bring about good in my life and the life of my family.  A divorce early in my life was very difficult on me, and yet God brought Sandy and me together before we were believers and after marriage we were saved and have had two wonderful children through our union together.  This is just one of the examples where God has overruled in my life because of mistakes that I made.  I am very thankful for God overruling in my life through His love and grace.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Put on the spiritual armor:  the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of the gospel of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God.
  2. Keep a short list with the Lord.
  3. Trust the Lord to continue to teach me contentment.
  4. Trust the Lord to see me through this x-ray test this morning and that it will not reveal anything that will threaten my life.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 3:14-17

14.  For this reason I bow my knees before the Father,

15.  from whom every family on earth and in heaven derives its name,

16.  that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with power through His Spirit in the inner man,

17.  so that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; and that you, being rooted and grounded in love,
