SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time Focus:  Sanctity of words; The single young woman at home

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Numbers 30:1-8

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Then Moses spoke to the heads of the tribes of the sons of Israel, saying, "This is the word which the LORD has commanded.  2  "If a man makes a vow to the LORD, or takes an oath to bind himself with a binding obligation, he shall not violate his word; he shall do according to all that proceeds out of his mouth.

3 ¶  "Also if a woman makes a vow to the LORD, and binds herself by an obligation in her father’s house in her youth, 4  and her father hears her vow and her obligation by which she has bound herself, and her father says nothing to her, then all her vows shall stand and every obligation by which she has bound herself shall stand.  5  "But if her father should forbid her on the day he hears of it, none of her vows or her obligations by which she has bound herself shall stand; and the LORD will forgive her because her father had forbidden her.  6  "However, if she should marry while under her vows or the rash statement of her lips by which she has bound herself, 7  and her husband hears of it and says nothing to her on the day he hears it, then her vows shall stand and her obligations by which she has bound herself shall stand. 8  "But if on the day her husband hears of it, he forbids her, then he shall annul her vow which she is under and the rash statement of her lips by which she has bound herself; and the LORD will forgive her.”

This section begins the last chapter in Warren Wiersbe’s book “Be Counted,” as far as going along with the book of Numbers.  He will have one final chapter as a summary of the book of Numbers, but this chapter covers chapters 30-35 as chapter 36 has already been looked at in an earlier SD.

This chapter is entitled “Preparing for Conquest,” as these chapters along with the entire book of Deuteronomy are the final books of Moses and will give preparation to this next generation of the children of Israel before they go into the Promised Land.  The first section in this last chapter is about words, basically vows and oaths.  A vow is something a person makes to the Lord that he will do and an oath is something that a person promises to the Lord that he will never do.

In the first two verses of this chapter Moses speaks to the heads of the tribes of Israel about vows and oaths, but in verses three-eight Moses speaks to the single young women who are living at home.  Moses tells them that if they make a vow to the Lord and their father hears of this vow and does not stop the woman from keeping the vow then she must keep it, but if the father hears of the vow and wants to stop it he can do that too.  The same is true with a woman who is married and makes a vow to the Lord and the husband hears it but does nothing about it then she must keep it, however if the husband wants to stop it he can as soon as he hears of it.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Words are important is what I get out of this section, for I am to watch what I say for sometimes when I am tired or mad the words that I speak are not worth speaking so I need to watch what I say.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  2.  May my life be transformed by the renewing of my mind through the Word of God.
  3. Learn to be content.
  4. Trust that the Lord will guide my path.
