SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The family inheritance

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Numbers 27:1-11 & 36

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Then the daughters of Zelophehad, the son of Hepher, the son of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh the son of Joseph, came near; and these are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah and Hoglah and Milcah and Tirzah.  2  They stood before Moses and before Eleazar the priest and before the leaders and all the congregation, at the doorway of the tent of meeting, saying, 3  "Our father died in the wilderness, yet he was not among the company of those who gathered themselves together against the LORD in the company of Korah; but he died in his own sin, and he had no sons.  4 “Why should the name of our father be withdrawn from among his family because he had no son? Give us a possession among our father’s brothers."  5  So Moses brought their case before the LORD.  6  Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 7  "The daughters of Zelophehad are right in their statements. You shall surely give them a hereditary possession among their father’s brothers, and you shall transfer the inheritance of their father to them.  8  "Further, you shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘If a man dies and has no son, then you shall transfer his inheritance to his daughter.  9  ‘If he has no daughter, then you shall give his inheritance to his brothers.  10  ‘If he has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his father’s brothers.  11  ‘If his father has no brothers, then you shall give his inheritance to his nearest relative in his own family, and he shall possess it; and it shall be a statutory ordinance to the sons of Israel, just as the LORD commanded Moses.’”

1 ¶  And the heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, 2  and they said, "The LORD commanded my lord to give the land by lot to the sons of Israel as an inheritance, and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters.  3  "But if they marry one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; thus it will be withdrawn from our allotted inheritance.  4  "When the jubilee of the sons of Israel comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers."

5 ¶  Then Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the word of the LORD, saying, "The tribe of the sons of Joseph are right in their statements.  6  "This is what the LORD has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry whom they wish; only they must marry within the family of the tribe of their father.’  7  "Thus no inheritance of the sons of Israel shall be transferred from tribe to tribe, for the sons of Israel shall each hold to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers.  8  "Every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers.  9  "Thus no inheritance shall be transferred from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the sons of Israel shall each hold to his own inheritance."  10  Just as the LORD had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did:  11  Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad married their uncles’ sons.  12  They married those from the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained with the tribe of the family of their father.  13  These are the commandments and the ordinances which the LORD commanded to the sons of Israel through Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho.”

I usually do not copy and past this many verses on my SD but I thought it was necessary to do so because it will help in the flow of what happens in these two different chapters.

It is important to remember that the land belonged to the Lord and it was up to Him to divide it the way that He saw fit.  Under “normal” circumstances all inheritances went to the men of the family of which the first two-thirds went to the oldest son and the remaining third was divided between the remaining sons and if their was a daughter she would receive a dowry for her inheritance.  In the case above there were three daughters from an offspring of Manasseh whose father died and had not sons and so they wanted an inheritance of the land and they came to Moses to discuss this with him.  Moses did the right thing by taking it to the Lord and the Lord told Moses that the daughters were right and should receive an inheritance of the land.  This brought up another problem which is discussed in chapter 36 for all of the land once it was divided was to remain in the same tribe and so if these women would marry someone from a different tribe then their land would belong to the tribe from which their husband came from and so Moses speaks to the Lord and the Lord says that if these women would marry within their own tribe there would be not problem for the land would then remain within the tribes inheritance.  That is what they did for they married their cousins and this took care of the problem.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  “18  Flee immorality. Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body, but the immoral man sins against his own body.

19   Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?”  This is what Paul wrote to the Corinthians and it is similar to one of the points that was made in the text above in that just as the land belonged to the Lord for He created it so does my body belong to the Lord because Jesus Christ died for me and thus I belong to the Lord and because of this fact I am to flee immorality.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Flee immorality.
  2. Learn Contentment.
  3. Learn more of who God is so that I can worship Him better.
  4. Trust the Lord to guide my path.
