SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The battle

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Numbers 31:1-10

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 2  "Take full vengeance for the sons of Israel on the Midianites; afterward you will be gathered to your people."  3  Moses spoke to the people, saying, "Arm men from among you for the war, that they may go against Midian to execute the LORD’S vengeance on Midian.  4  "A thousand from each tribe of all the tribes of Israel you shall send to the war."  5  So there were furnished from the thousands of Israel, a thousand from each tribe, twelve thousand armed for war.  6  Moses sent them, a thousand from each tribe, to the war, and Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest, to the war with them, and the holy vessels and the trumpets for the alarm in his hand.

7 ¶  So they made war against Midian, just as the LORD had commanded Moses, and they killed every male.  8  They killed the kings of Midian along with the rest of their slain: Evi and Rekem and Zur and Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; they also killed Balaam the son of Beor with the sword.  9  The sons of Israel captured the women of Midian and their little ones; and all their cattle and all their flocks and all their goods they plundered.  10  Then they burned all their cities where they lived and all their camps with fire.”

The scene now changes from the last chapter as God tells Moses that he has to send Israel into battle to fight against the Midianites and then Moses would be taken in death as he is gathered to his people.  Moses would take 1000 men from each tribe to do battle against the Midianites and it is supposed that Joshua would head up the army with Phinehas the son of Eleazar the priest to go into battle with the army.  The Ark of the Covenant would go with them and the trumpet would be blown as Israel went into battle.  It is interesting that one of those who would be killed was Balaam who was instrumental in adding to the sin of Israel and that is why God was going to destroy the Midianites.

Joshua killed all of the males and all of the kings, but the women were not killed and that is a subject for the next SD.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Sometimes God gives His children hard tasks to complete, but God is always right in what He does and what He has His children do even thought some will disagree with what is done.  I must be faithful in doing the things God leads me to do.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Trust the Lord to lead my life each and every day as I go live in a world that is a battle ground for believers.
  2. Be content.
  3. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  4. Have my mind renewed with the Word of God.
