Honoring Marriage (Ex. 20:14)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time           Focus:  Honoring marriage

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 20:14

Message of the verses:  “14.  ‘You shall not commit adultery.’”

The Scriptures have a lot to say about adultery, which begins with this seventh commandment.  It was a serious crime which was punishable by death as seen in Lev. 20:10 “If there is a man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, one who commits adultery with his friend’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death.”  Deu. 22:22 repeats this same the same thing.

Paul writes about this sin in 1 Thes. 4:1-8 and sees it as robbery.  The writer of Proverbs sees it as robbery to ones self, Proverbs 6:20-35.  I suppose the most “famous” case of adultery in the Scriptures is that of King David, and it caused not only David and his family a lot of grief, but is also caused the entire nation of Israel a lot of grief with many people actually getting killed because of David’s actions.

The sin of adultery begins in the mind as Jesus brings this out in Matthew 5:27-30, “27 ¶  "You have heard that it was said, ‘YOU SHALL NOT COMMIT ADULTERY’; 28  but I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lust for her has already committed adultery with her in his heart.  29  "If your right eye makes you stumble, tear it out and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to be thrown into hell.  30  "If your right hand makes you stumble, cut it off and throw it from you; for it is better for you to lose one of the parts of your body, than for your whole body to go into hell.”  Jesus is stating that one should have a “spiritual operation” to rid themselves of the body parts that cause one to sin.

Adultery begins in the heart and in the mind and that is the easiest place to stop it before it goes onto the body parts and one commits physical adultery.  “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  There are some sins that are on my radar list and some sins that are not, for they are not such a big problem as the ones on that list.  I believe that lust, which is where adultery begins, is a problem of some sort to most males, especially in the video culture that we live in today and therefore there must be a plan in effect to stop it and verses to memorize that can stop this problem and hopefully I can use these in my life when this sin becomes a temptation to me.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
  2. Pray like Epaphras.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my path.
  4. Trust the Lord to make a way of escape for tests and temptations.

Memory verses for the week:                      Colossians 4:12-13

12.    Epaphras, who is one of your number, a bondslave of Jesus Christ, sends you his greetings, always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.

13.    For I testify for him that he has a deep concern for you and for those who are  in Laodicea and Hierapolis.
