Speaking the Truth (Ex. 20:16)

My Worship Time           Focus:  Speaking the truth

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 20:16

Message of the verses:  “16 ‘You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.’”

This commandment speaks about lying and states that a person shall not lie about another person.  This commandment is not speaking only about a court case, but anything that has to do with lying.  In Det. 17:6-7 Moses tells the people that it will take more than one wittiness to convict a person of a crime that will be punishable by death and also those who are the witnesses will be the first to begin the process of putting them to death.  “6  "On the evidence of two witnesses or three witnesses, he who is to die shall be put to death; he shall not be put to death on the evidence of one witness.  7  "The hand of the witnesses shall be first against him to put him to death, and afterward the hand of all the people. So you shall purge the evil from your midst.”

The Bible has a lot to say about lying and I want to take some time to quote some of the verses here:

Ps 15:3  He does not slander with his tongue, Nor does evil to his neighbor, Nor takes up a reproach against his friend.

Ps 101:7  He who practices deceit shall not dwell within my house; He who speaks falsehood shall not maintain his position before me.

Pr 11:13  He who goes about as a talebearer reveals secrets, But he who is trustworthy conceals a matter.

8  But we know that the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9  realizing the fact that law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and rebellious, for the ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10  and immoral men and homosexuals and kidnappers and liars and perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to sound teaching, 11  according to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, with which I have been entrusted. (1 Tim. 1:8-11)

While reading Alistair Begg’s book about the Ten Commandments he states that all of the commandments have a positive and a negative side to them.  Some of the commandments sound as if they are negative as this one does and some of them sound of being positive.  With this said I want to look at the positive side of this commandment and that would be that a person is to always tell the truth, they are not to gossip about another person, and by doing the positive things of this commandment it would make for a better world.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I want to write about something that my son told me yesterday concerning his job that seems to go along with this commandment.  He revealed to me that his supervisor has done some things that were not suppose to be done and so he confronted her about it and yet she did it again and so he had to get hold of someone in the company who was in charge of things like this to let them know of what she was doing and now there is to be an investigation.  The problem that could arise from this is that the woman is a minority and may get away with this as she got away with it before, but telling the truth is always the correct thing to do.  I am very proud of David for doing the right thing.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. I want to trust the Lord to work out all of the seemingly negative things that are happening to my family at this time.  Trust the Lord that He will be true to His promises that He will never leave us nor forsake us.  Trusting that these things will work out for our good and for His glory.

Memory verses for the week:                      Colossians 4:12-13

12.    Epaphras, who is one of your number, a bondslave of Jesus Christ, sends you his greetings, always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.

13.    For I testify for him that he has a deep concern for you and for those in Laodicea and Hierapolis.
