The Storm (Ex. 19:16-19 & 20:18-20)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time           Focus:  The Storm

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 19:16-19; 20:18-20

Message of the verses:  “16 ¶  So it came about on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunder and lightning flashes and a thick cloud upon the mountain and a very loud trumpet sound, so that all the people who were in the camp trembled.  17 And Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they stood at the foot of the mountain.  18 Now Mount Sinai was all in smoke because the LORD descended upon it in fire; and its smoke ascended like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain quaked violently.  19 When the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke and God answered him with thunder.”

18 ¶ All the people perceived the thunder and the lightning flashes and the sound of the trumpet and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled and stood at a distance.  19 Then they said to Moses, "Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die."  20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid; for God has come in order to test you, and in order that the fear of Him may remain with you, so that you may not sin.’”

Storms in the Scripture often are a symbol of the awesome presence and power of God, and that is the case in this section.  It must be remembered that the section in Dr. Wiersbe’s book which represent the last three SD’s is entitled “A life of sanctity,” which is what God has called his people to be.  Proverbs 1:7 says “The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge,” and as I look at this section I can see fear in God’s people for in verse 19 of chapter 20 the people tell Moses ‘Speak to us yourself and we will listen; but let not God speak to us, or we will die.”  I don’t think that they would have died and it could have been a big mistake not to have God speaks to them at this time and in the way that He chose to speak to them.  God was about to give Israel, His chosen people, His Law and His Law is perfect and Holy, and He wanted Israel go fear Him.  Moses tell them in verse 20 chapter 20 not to be afraid of God, but God has come to them in order to test them and in order that the fear of Him may remain with the people so that they would not sin.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I think that the fear of the Lord is something that I have a hard time understanding, at least understanding all of it.  One of the definitions of  the word translated as fear in verse 20 of chapter 20 means to have fear (of God), respect, reverence, piety, however there are other meanings of this word too:  “1) fear, terror, fearing; 1a) fear, terror;  1b) awesome or terrifying thing (object causing fear).  I don’t think that God wants us to be terrorized of Him, yet is there more than having just reverence for God?  As mentioned in another SD I struggle at times of bringing God down to my level, the level of a blood bought son of God and I realize that this is not correct, however I don’t think that the other way of being so fearful of Him that I cannot serve Him because of that fear is correct either.  My desire is to have a reverent fear of the Lord and not treat Him like a person for He is higher than any being and therefore deserves my referent fear and all of my worship.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. I want to fear the Lord for fearing the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, Pr. 1:7.
  2. I desire to be yoked with the Lord Jesus Christ, Matthew 11:28-30.
  3. Trust the Lord to make a way of escape from temptations, 1 Cor. 10:13.
  4. Have a prayer life like Epaphras, Col. 4:12-13.
  5. To learn to live a life of contentment, Phil. 4:11.

Memory verses for the week:                      Colossians 4:12-13

12.    Epaphras, who is one of your number, a bondslave of Jesus Christ, sends you his greetings, always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.

13.    For I testify for him that he has a deep concern for you and for those in Laodicea and Hierapolis.
