The Suggestion by Jethro (Ex. 18:19-27)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time           Focus:  The suggestion

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 18:19-27

Message of the verses:  “19  "Now listen to me: I will give you counsel, and God be with you. You be the people’s representative before God, and you bring the disputes to God, 20  then teach them the statutes and the laws, and make known to them the way in which they are to walk and the work they are to do.  21  "Furthermore, you shall select out of all the people able men who fear God, men of truth, those who hate dishonest gain; and you shall place these over them as leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.  22  "Let them judge the people at all times; and let it be that every major dispute they will bring to you, but every minor dispute they themselves will judge. So it will be easier for you, and they will bear the burden with you.  23  "If you do this thing and God so commands you, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace."  24  So Moses listened to his father-in-law and did all that he had said.  25  Moses chose able men out of all Israel and made them heads over the people, leaders of thousands, of hundreds, of fifties and of tens.  26  They judged the people at all times; the difficult dispute they would bring to Moses, but every minor dispute they themselves would judge.  27  Then Moses bade his father-in-law farewell, and he went his way into his own land.”

As I read some of the commentary on this section it says that some people believe that if God wanted Moses to get this message He would have given it to Moses in the first place.  I have stated on different SD’s before that my favorite character in the Scriptures is Balham’s donkey, and the reason that she is my favorite is that she was available to do the work that God had for her to do and did it without complaining about it.  I believe that if God can use a donkey to get done what He wants to get done that He can use Jethro even if Jethro is not a true believer, which is up in the air to me.  God is a God of order and the plan that Jethro gave to Moses is a plan of order that was used by Moses to take some of the burden off of him and it also gave others who were qualified to work for the Lord too.

Luke 16:8 has this to say:  “And his master praised the unrighteous manager because he had acted shrewdly; for the sons of this age are more shrewd in relation to their own kind than the sons of light.”  Dr. Wiersbe comments this way about this verse:  “Of course we never adopt a practice or policy until we understand the principle behind it and make sure it’s in agreement with Scripture (James 3:13-18).  There are times when unbelievers are shrewder that believers, especially if believers are depending on their own wisdom and not relying on the wisdom from above as James writes about, and so the shrewdness of an un-believe can be used by a believer with out a problem as long as it agrees with Scripture.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I know that being a male has caused me to not listen to advice from others, especially from women, and the Lord has shown me the error of my ways on different occasions.  I have to learn to weigh the advice that I take with Scripture and trust the Holy Spirit to guide me in making good decisions, especially with the funds that God has given to me.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  Trust the Lord to guide my path as seen in Proverbs 3:5-7; trust the Lord to keep me from falling into temptation as seen in 1 Cor. 10:13; trust the Lord to have a better prayer life as seen in Col. 4:12; learn contentment through the difficult trials and test that the Lord has me go through for my spiritual growth as Paul writes about in Philippians 4:11; and yoke up with the Lord Jesus Christ as He speaks of in Matthew 11:28-30.

Memory verse for the week:                       Colossians 4:12

12.    Epaphras, who is one of your number, a bondslave of Jesus Christ, sends you his greetings, always laboring earnestly for you in his prayers, that you may stand perfect and fully assured in all the will of God.
