The Lamb Was Roasted and Eaten (Ex. 12:8-11, & 46)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time           Focus:  The lamb was roasted and eaten

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 12:8-11, 46

Message of the verses:  “8  ‘They shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs.  9  ‘Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all with water, but rather roasted with fire, both its head and its legs along with its entrails.  10  ‘And you shall not leave any of it over until morning, but whatever is left of it until morning, you shall burn with fire.  11  ‘Now you shall eat it in this manner: with your loins girded, your sandals on your feet, and your staff in your hand; and you shall eat it in haste—it is the LORD’S Passover.  46  "It is to be eaten in a single house; you are not to bring forth any of the flesh outside of the house, nor are you to break any bone of it.”

These verses have some deep spiritual meaning as they are related to the Lord Jesus Christ and His sacrifice on the cross as the true Passover Lamb.  The Passover lamb was roasted and not boiled because if it were boiled then the bones would have to be broken, which was not allowed in this case.  This also enabled the lamb to remain whole.  Not only do believers trust the Lord Jesus Christ to save them for their sins through His sacrifice on the cross, but believers also feed on Christ to give them strength throughout their days on earth.  The passage in John 6:51-59 speaks of this feeding on the Lord Jesus Christ in a spiritual way.

The bitter herbs represent the bitterness of being in slavery in Egypt for four-hundred and thirty years.  During their wonderings in the wilderness the children of Israel would from time to time look at their time back in Egypt with fondness instead of slavery.

The bread that they ate was unleavened bread because they did not have time to add the yeast to the bread.  Leaven was also a symbol of impurity to the Jews.  Yeast is an image of sin because it’s hidden; it works silently and secretly; it spreads and pollutes; and it causes dough to rise (puffed up—1 Cor. 4:18-25).  There are also other teachings in the NT on yeast:  1. false teachings; 2. compared to hypocrisy; and 3: sinful living.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Feeding on the Lord Jesus Christ to give me the strength throughout my day has been shown to me in a new way from the passage in John 6.  This passage has always been somewhat of a mystery to me and the teaching on this passage from Dr. Wiersbe has helped me clear it up in my mind.

My Steps of Faith for Today:  1. Feeding on the Lord Jesus Christ to give me the strength needed for today.  2. Learning to be content with the things that life brings my way, which are directed by the Lord.  2.  Yoke up with the Lord Jesus to see me through the difficult times that we are going through.
