Attacking the Enemy (Deu. 1:40-46)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Attacking the enemy

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deuteronomy 1:40-46

Message of the verses:  “40  ‘But as for you, turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.’  41  "Then you said to me, ‘We have sinned against the LORD; we will indeed go up and fight, just as the LORD our God commanded us.’ And every man of you girded on his weapons of war, and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country.  42  "And the LORD said to me, ‘Say to them, "Do not go up nor fight, for I am not among you; otherwise you will be defeated before your enemies."’  43  "So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead you rebelled against the command of the LORD, and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country.  44  "The Amorites who lived in that hill country came out against you and chased you as bees do, and crushed you from Seir to Hormah.  45  "Then you returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you.  46  "So you remained in Kadesh many days, the days that you spent there.”

This SD will be similar to the one that was done on the 3rd of Jan. 2009 because it goes over the same thing.  This part of Deuteronomy is a review of things that happened earlier and recorded in the book of Numbers.

This first generation felt bad for the consequences of their sin and tried to do things in their own power, that is fight against their enemies when God told them not to, and the result was that they lost the battle and had to begin a 38 year wandering in the wilderness until all of those 20 years and older died off.

I want to touch on something that has been presented by Dr. Wiersbe here that was new to my thinking and that is why it was not Moses who led the people into the Promised Land.  Moses did sin against the Lord when he hit the rock and not talk to it and also said that it was him that had to bring the people water and all of this was wrong.  Another reason that he did not led people was that he represented the Law and God’s people cannot claim their blessings by obeying the law it has to be by God’s grace and that is why Joshua had to lead the people into the Promised Land for His name along with Jesus’ name means “Jehovah is salvation.”

Another thing that I learned from this lesson is that some of the people in the Bible that were famous for something tried to do that something in their own power and failed at it because they were not doing in the power of the Spirit.  An example of this is that Abraham was known for his faith yet he ran off to Egypt and told the Pharaoh that his wife was his sister.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am not to get big headed about things, but do things in the power of the Lord.
