God Expected the Nations to Obey Him (Deu. 7:23-26)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                    Focus:  God expected the nation to obey Him

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Deuteronomy 7:23-26

Message of the verses:  “23  "But the LORD your God will deliver them before you, and will throw them into great confusion until they are destroyed. 24  "He will deliver their kings into your hand so that you will make their name perish from under heaven; no man will be able to stand before you until you have destroyed them. 25  "The graven images of their gods you are to burn with fire; you shall not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it for yourselves, or you will be snared by it, for it is an abomination to the LORD your God. 26  "You shall not bring an abomination into your house, and like it come under the ban; you shall utterly detest it and you shall utterly abhor it, for it is something banned.”

Warren Wiersbe speaks of what James writes at the beginning of his commentary on this section:  “Faith without works is dead.”  “People may talk about faith, analyze faith, and seek to explain it, but until they do what God commands, they will never understand what faith is all about.”

God tells Israel that they are to destroy all of the idols that they will find while they begin to conquer the nations in Canaan, and that they are to burn them and not keep any of the gold or silver that they are made of for themselves.  All that is in the land belongs to the Lord and Israel was to be good stewards of the land and give to the Lord the things that he required of them.  Now we come to the heart of all of this and the heart of all of this has to be love, and Moses discussed this in the previous chapter of Deuteronomy and verses 1-9, but I will only quote verse five:  “"You shall love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.”  I have heard that love is giving something to someone who needs it the most when they deserve it the least.  God gave salvation to me when I needed it the most but deserved it the least.  It was a gift from God that I could never earn, as it was a gift of His great love for me and I am to show this kind of love to others.

Love of the Lord is why Israel should have obeyed Him, but they did not obey Him, and if they did obey Him it was because they did it out of obligation and not out of love and therefore this did not bless them or the Lord.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Why do I obey the Lord?  This is a good question, and the correct answer is because of my love for Him, but that is not always the case, for sometimes I obey Him in order to be blessed by Him, or to show others how spiritual that I am.  Paul writes in Ephesians 6:5-6:  “Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; 6  not by way of eyeservice, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart.”  As a slave of Jesus Christ I am to obey Him from my heart because of the love that I have for Him and for no other reason.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Obey the Lord from my heart of love that I have for Him.
  2. Continue to learn contentment.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide me this day.
  4. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 1:3-6

  1. Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessings in the heavenly places, in Christ,
  2. just as He chose us before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him.  In love
  3. He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
  4. to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
  5. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
  6. which He lavished on us.  In all wisdom and insight
