God Is Wise-Learn From Him (Deu. 4:5-9)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                              Focus:  God is wise—learn from Him

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Deuteronomy 4:5-9

Message of the verses:  “5  "See, I have taught you statutes and judgments just as the LORD my God commanded me, that you should do thus in the land where you are entering to possess it.  6  "So keep and do them, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise and understanding people.’  7  "For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as is the LORD our God whenever we call on Him?  8  "Or what great nation is there that has statutes and judgments as righteous as this whole law which I am setting before you today?  9  "Only give heed to yourself and keep your soul diligently, so that you do not forget the things which your eyes have seen and they do not depart from your heart all the days of your life; but make them known to your sons and your grandsons.”

I keep seeing what a blessing God had given to the children of Israel, and many times they refused to act upon the things that God had told them to do and thus they were punished for their sins.  At the same time I cannot be too hard on them without being hard on myself, for I sin too and have had to be disciplined by the Lord too.

God is giving wisdom to the nation of Israel in these five verses and wisdom in the Old Testament times had to do with the character of a person rather than human intelligences and it describes the right use of knowledge.  In this short section there are three important lessons that Israel could learn if they followed God’s wisdom.  The first is that they would be successful in conquering the Promised Land as God had already had the plan worked out and all Joshua had to do was follow it.  Joshua did make a couple mistakes when he did not seek the Lord’s wisdom.

The second thing has to do with the neighbors of Israel when the got into the Promised Land, that they should be able to teach them the ways and Laws of the Lord.  Israel was more influenced by the nations around them that the other way around.

The third thing that Israel could learn from this wisdom of God is that they needed to teach it to their children for just at the Church is always one generation from not passing on the truths of the New Covenant so Israel was one generation from not teaching the Old Covenant to their children.  There will be more said on this subject latter.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I not only need to know God’s wisdom but I need to follow it so that my life will be pleasing to God and so when I get to heaven that I will have some jewels in my crown showing that I was faithful to the Lord.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Trust the Lord to guide my path each day, and seek the Lord each day in order to follow the path He is leading me on.
  2. Continue to learn contentment.
  3. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service today.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 1:1-2

1 Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, To the saints who are at Ephesus and who are faithful in Christ Jesus:

2 Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.
