God Teaches Us (Deu. 8:3)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  God teaches us

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deuteronomy 8:3

Message of the verse:  “3  "He humbled you and let you be hungry, and fed you with manna which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that He might make you understand that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by everything that proceeds out of the mouth of the LORD.”

I believe that in an earlier SD on Deuteronomy that I wrote that one of the verses that I was then studying was that which Jesus quoted while being tempted by Satan in the wilderness, but when Satan was tempting Jesus to make bread out of stones Jesus quoted this verse to him.  It is good to remember that there were not any verse divisions in the Scriptures as they and the chapter divisions were added much later on in order to make the Bible easier to read so when Jesus quoted this verse He did not quote the entire verse just what was necessary to take care of that particular temptation that Satan was throwing at Him at that time.

This verse speaks of being humbled by God and that was a good thing for these people and for believers today for there are times when that is what is needed in order to do the things that the Lord desires for His people to get done.

Next manna is mentioned, which was the food that God provided for them to eat while they were wandering in the wilderness, and this Manna was given to them until they were established in the Promised Land and then the Lord did not provide it for them anymore.

The new Manna is spoken of by the Lord Jesus Christ in John chapter six as He gave a sermon on it.  Dr. Wiersbe has some interesting things to say about that sermon that I will quote at this time.  “In His sermon on the bread of Life (John 6), Jesus pointed out that, like the manna, He came down from heaven, but that He came to give life while the manna only sustained life.  God sent the manna to Israel alone, but He sent His son to the whole world.  Unless we received Jesus within our hearts, just as the body receives bread, we are not saved.  Our Lord’s sermon in John 6 has nothing to do with the Lord’s Supper (Eucharist) or any other religious ceremony.  It focuses entirely on having a personal relationship with Jesus through faith.  ‘Eating His flesh and drinking His blood’ is a metaphorical language for receiving Him personally within.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Feeding on Manna is feeding on Jesus Christ the Word of God, and feeding on the written Word of God is feeding on Jesus Christ the Word of God and this must be done each and everyday of my life in order to understand more about who He is and to understand what it is that the Lord Jesus Christ wants me to do as He guides me through His Word through His Spirit who causes me to understand what His Word is saying to me.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Obey the Lord because of the love I have for Him.
  2. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  3. Continue to learn contentment today.
  4. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 1:5-8

  1. He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
  2. to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
  3. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
  4. which He lavished on us.  In all wisdom and insight
