My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The Law of God Part 4

 

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deuteronomy 5:16-18

 

            Message of the verses:  “16  ‘Honor your father and your mother, as the LORD your God has commanded you, that your days may be prolonged and that it may go well with you on the land which the LORD your God gives you. 17  ‘You shall not murder. 18  ‘You shall not commit adultery.”

            When Jesus was talking about the Law He said in Mark 12:28-34 that the Law could be broken down in two parts, loving the Lord and loving ones neighbor.  The first four commandments of the Ten Commandments are vertical, they are between a person and God, and the last six are horizontal, a person loving other people, so if you think about it they form a cross +. 

            Commandment number five tells us to love our father and mother and there is a promise that goes along with this commandment that one would live long in the land that God gave to Israel if they do this.  Commandment number six forbids murder, for the Lord is the One who gives life and it up to the Lord when to take it away.  It is good to remember that this commandment does not forbid a person from defending himself or going to war as some say it does.  You can put abortion under this sixth commandment.  The seventh commandment tells that one should not commit adultery, and this commandment is speaking of sexual sins, of which were punished by death in Israel, and of which Jesus speaks of starting in one’s mind as the commandment of murdering does also.  Sin enters in a persons mind before a person commits that sin and it is in the mind where it is the easiest place to stop that sin.  In my reading of John 13 this morning it speaks of the Devil putting the thought into the mind of Judas to betray the Lord and he went out into the night to do his sinful deed, but it started in the mind.

 

            Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I would suppose that I have failed in all of these commandments especially in my mind and one of the best ways to not commit theses sins is to follow the Lord new commandment that He gave in John 13:34, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another, even as I have loved you, that you also love one another.”  By following this commandment and the commandment to love the Lord then it will be much harder to fall into breaking these three commandments. 

 

My Steps of Faith for Today:

 

1. Love the Lord with all of my heart soul and mind.
2. Love one another.
3. Continue to learn contentment.
4. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
5. Trust the Lord to direct my path today.
