Human Curiosity (Deu. 12:29-32)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Human curiosity

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Deuteronomy 12:29-32

Message of the verses:  “29  "When the LORD your God cuts off before you the nations which you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and dwell in their land, 30  beware that you are not ensnared to follow them, after they are destroyed before you, and that you do not inquire after their gods, saying, ‘How do these nations serve their gods, that I also may do likewise?’ 31  "You shall not behave thus toward the LORD your God, for every abominable act which the LORD hates they have done for their gods; for they even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods. 32  "Whatever I command you, you shall be careful to do; you shall not add to nor take away from it.”

This is the first point und the sub-point called “Avoiding Contamination” that I will be looking at today, and this entire section has to do with traps that the children of Israel were to avoid after going into the Promises Land, traps that could cause them to worship idols.

The detestable sin that is mentioned in this section of Scripture is the sin of offering ones children as a sacrifice to an idol, something that the children of Israel would do in their latter years in the land.  They became curios about the religious practices that were going on with the people living in their land and began to go away from the Lord and follow these evil practices.  Another way of avoiding them would have been to follow the commands of the Lord and destroy these people after they had gone into the land instead of allowing them to live and infect them with their idolatrous practices.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  There is a saying that I have known ever since I was a small child:  “Curiosity killed the cat,”  and after reading this section and understanding that curiosity was one of the things that caused the downfall of the nation of Israel it does make a lot of sense to me.  It is good at times to know the harmful things that people practice so that I can show them the error of their way, but not to get to close as to making it cause me to stumble.  A former Pastor(not of mine) would go into strip clubs to preach the gospel and eventually he would have a lot of trouble in this area.  He should have stayed away from places like that in the first place and avoided the trouble.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Try again to get the pass word fixed on our cable network.
  2. Trust the Lord to continue to teach me contentment.
  3. Pray that my inner man will be strengthened through the Holy Spirit.
  4. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service today.
  5. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 1:6-9

  1. to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
  2. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
  3. which He lavished on us.  In all wisdom and insight
  4. He made known to us the mystery of His will, according to His kind intention which He purposed in Him
