SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  God Tests Us

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deuteronomy 8:1-2

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  "All the commandments that I am commanding you today you shall be careful to do, that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land which the LORD swore to give to your forefathers.  2  "You shall remember all the way which the LORD your God has led you in the wilderness these forty years, that He might humble you, testing you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not.”

With Today’s SD I begin a new chapter in Warren Wiersbe’s commentary on Deuteronomy.  The title of this chapter is “See What You Are,” and it will cover chapters eight through eleven of Deuteronomy.  The first main section, “Children in the wilderness” covers the first five verses of Deuteronomy chapter eight, and the first sub-point under that is today’s lesson, “God tests us.”

Warren Wiersbe says in his commentary on this section that God tests us to bring out the best in us, while Satan tempts us to bring out the worst in us.  In verse two Moses writes that God was testing the children of Israel in the wilderness in order to know what was in their hearts, whether they would keep His commandments or not.  The first generation that came out of Egypt failed the test and the result was that all of the children of Israel walked around in the wilderness for the next thirty-eight years until all of that first generation died with the exception of Joshua and Caleb before the next generation would go in and conquer the Promised Land.

Warren Wiersbe goes on to say, “When God allows a difficult circumstance to test us, we will either trust Him and become more mature, or we will tempt Him and become more miserable.  The difference?  Believing the promises of God and relying on the Lord to care for us and bring us through for His glory and our good.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  There have been tests in my life that I have passed by trusting in the Lord, and relying on the promises that are in His Word, and there have been tests that I have not done so well on when I did not trust His promises.  The key is to know God’s Word, and to trust in Him through His Word to do as He has promised.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Obey the Lord because of the love I have for Him.
  2. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  3. Give myself to the Lord for service and worship.
  4. Continue to learn contentment.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Ephesians 1:3-8

  1. Blessed by the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
  2. just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world to be holy and blameless before Him.  In love
  3. He predestined us to adoption as sons through Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the kind intention of His will,
  4. to the praise of the glory of His grace, which He freely bestowed on us in the Beloved.
  5. In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of His grace
  6. which He lavished on us.  In wisdom and insight
