SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The God of the Law

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Deuteronomy 5:22-33

Message of the verses:  “22  "These words the LORD spoke to all your assembly at the mountain from the midst of the fire, of the cloud and of the thick gloom, with a great voice, and He added no more. He wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me.

23 ¶  "And when you heard the voice from the midst of the darkness, while the mountain was burning with fire, you came near to me, all the heads of your tribes and your elders. 24  "You said, ‘Behold, the LORD our God has shown us His glory and His greatness, and we have heard His voice from the midst of the fire; we have seen today that God speaks with man, yet he lives. 25  ‘Now then why should we die? For this great fire will consume us; if we hear the voice of the LORD our God any longer, then we will die. 26  ‘For who is there of all flesh who has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the midst of the fire, as we have, and lived? 27  ‘Go near and hear all that the LORD our God says; then speak to us all that the LORD our God speaks to you, and we will hear and do it.’ 28  "The LORD heard the voice of your words when you spoke to me, and the LORD said to me, ‘I have heard the voice of the words of this people which they have spoken to you. They have done well in all that they have spoken. 29  ‘Oh that they had such a heart in them, that they would fear Me and keep all My commandments always, that it may be well with them and with their sons forever! 30  ‘Go, say to them, "Return to your tents." 31  ‘But as for you, stand here by Me, that I may speak to you all the commandments and the statutes and the judgments which you shall teach them, that they may observe them in the land which I give them to possess.’ 32  "So you shall observe to do just as the LORD your God has commanded you; you shall not turn aside to the right or to the left. 33  "You shall walk in all the way which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you will possess.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I believe that one of the great lessons to learn as a believer in Jesus Christ is to have the right idea about the Law of God, for there are verses in the Bible that tell us that we are no longer under the Law, but we are under grace, grace given through Jesus Christ.  So what does the Law have to do with the NT believer?  For one thing “The purpose of the law of God is to reveal the God of the law, and when you focus on Him, you find it a delight to obey His commands, ‘I delight to do Your will, O my God; Your Law is within my heart.’”  (Psalm 40:8)  Next:  “Even though God’s children live under grace and not under the Mosaic Law (Rom. 6:14; Gal. 5:1), it’s important for us to know the Law of God so that we might better know the God of the Law and please Him.  Christ fulfilled the types of the symbols found in the Law, so we no longer practice the Old Testament rituals as Israel did.  Christ bore the curse of the Law on the cross (Ga. 3:10-13) so that we need not fear judgment (Rom. 8:1).  But the moral law still stands and God still judges sin.  It’s as wrong today to lie, steal, commit adultery, and murder as it was when Moses received the tables of the Law at Mount Sinai.  In fact, it’s worse, because we have today the full revelation of God’s will through Jesus Christ, and we sin against a flood of light.”

These were a couple of the statement s written by Warren Wiersbe in his commentary on these verses.  He also added a couple of quotes from A. W. Tozer’s book “The Knowledge of the Holy.  This book by Tozer is written about some of the attributes of God and so this quote from him is understandability seen in this section.  “No religion has ever been greater than its idea of God”, and “The essence of idolatry is the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him.”  I think that this last statement could be said by saying that it is wrong to put God in a box.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I believe that it is so very important for me to study and to know the Law of God, for as I know more and more about the Law of God I will know more and more about the God of the Law, for in the Law of God, His character and attributes can be seen, therefore I will learn more about God by studying His Law.  The 119th Psalm is written about the Law of God and it is no accident that it is the longest chapter in all of Scripture.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Learn more about the Law of God so I can learn more about the God of the Law.
  2. Continue to learn contentment.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  4. Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
