An Appointed Time (Lev. 16:1-2, 29)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                              Focus:  An appointed time

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Lev. 16:1-2; 29

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Now the LORD spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they had approached the presence of the LORD and died. 2  The LORD said to Moses: "Tell your brother Aaron that he shall not enter at any time into the holy place inside the veil, before the mercy seat which is on the ark, or he will die; for I will appear in the cloud over the mercy seat.

“29 ¶  "This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls and not do any work, whether the native, or the alien who sojourns among you;”

It seems that there are two calendars for Israel, one is religious and one is for other things and I am not sure exactly which is which, but for this study that is not the most important thing to know.  I am beginning a new chapter in Dr. Wiersbe’s book that is called “Israel’s High and Holy Day,” and that is the Day of Atonement, which is written about in the 16th chapter of Leviticus.  Moses picks up after Aaron’s two sons have been killed to explain about the Day of Atonement.  For my purposes for this study I will look at how this Holy Day is a picture of what Jesus Christ did on the cross along with what is stated in Leviticus 16.

Just to be clear on when this will take place this year (2008) Rosh Hashanah, which is the beginning of the civil year is sundown on the 29th of September and ten days later will be Yon Kippur or the Day of Atonement.

The 29th verse in Lev. 16 gives the timeline from the Lord as to when the Day of Atonement will be celebrated each year.

Aaron would understandably be frightened to go into the Holy of Holies after what happened to his two sons, but He would have to go there once a year, that is the High Priest would have to go there once a year in order to put the blood in there for God to forgive the sins of Israel.  Now Jesus Christ who came in the “fullness of time” would go to the cross and die for the sins of the world and this would not have to be repeated each year, “Otherwise, He would have needed to suffer often since the foundation of the world; but now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.” (Heb. 9:26)

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I am more thankful that I can express at what the Lord Jesus Christ did on the cross to secure my salvation for ever and am also glade that there need not be any more sacrifices to be done in order to have salvation like in the OT.  My sins are forgiven, but I still sin and am in need of confessing them to the Lord when I sin in order to have sweet fellowship with Him.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. “23  Search me, O God, and know my heart; Try me and know my anxious thoughts; 24  And see if there be any hurtful way in me, And lead me in the everlasting way.
  2. “1 ¶  Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.  2  And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.”
  3. “5  Trust in the LORD with all your heart And do not lean on your own understanding.  6  In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He will make your paths straight.”
  4. “11  Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.”
  5. “11  Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am.”

Memory verses for the week:                                  Exodus 20:8-12

  1. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  2. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
  3. but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
  4. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
