The Day of Atonement: Forgiveness (Lev. 23:26-32)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                    Focus:  The Day of Atonement:  Forgiveness

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Leviticus 23:26-32

Message of the verses:  “26  The LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 27  "On exactly the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement; it shall be a holy convocation for you, and you shall humble your souls and present an offering by fire to the LORD.  28  "You shall not do any work on this same day, for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement on your behalf before the LORD your God.  29  "If there is any person who will not humble himself on this same day, he shall be cut off from his people.  30  "As for any person who does any work on this same day, that person I will destroy from among his people.  31  "You shall do no work at all. It is to be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwelling places.  32  "It is to be a sabbath of complete rest to you, and you shall humble your souls; on the ninth of the month at evening, from evening until evening you shall keep your sabbath.’”

This section was already studied in Leviticus chapter sixteen.  God, through Moses, speaks here of the fasting and the praying and not doing any work on this wonderful Day of Atonement.

Paul writes in Ephesians 2:8-9 “8  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”  As I think of these verses with what God emphasized in the section above it reminds me that I did not have to do any work in order to receive the free gift of salvation.

Dr. Wiersbe points out that the “prophetic message of the Day of Atonement is that when Israel is gathered to her land, the Jews will see their rejected Messiah, repent of their sins (Zech. 12:10-13:1), and be cleansed.  This scattered nation will be gathered and the sinful nation will be cleansed.  What a glorious day that will be!”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  A I look over the verses from Ephesian it says that the gift of salvation is just that a gift of God and that I am not to boast about it.  I have to admit that there are times when I do think of myself as better that those who do not have this free gift in a way that is not becoming to a true believer.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. As God to make me more humble when it comes to thinking that I am better than those who at this time in their lives do not have the free gift of salvation and that instead of looking down on some of them I am to pray for them to receive this gift.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Exodus 20:17 & Romans 6:1-2

17.    You shall not covet your neighbor’s house; you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife or his male servant or his female servant or his ox or his donkey or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

  1. What shall we say then?  Are we to continue in sin that grace may increase?
  2. May it never be!  How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
