Organizing the Tribes (Num. 2:1-34)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  Organizing The Tribes

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Numbers 2:1-34

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Now the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying, 2  "The sons of Israel shall camp, each by his own standard, with the banners of their fathers’ households; they shall camp around the tent of meeting at a distance.

3 ¶  "Now those who camp on the east side toward the sunrise shall be of the standard of the camp of Judah, by their armies, and the leader of the sons of Judah: Nahshon the son of Amminadab, 4  and his army, even their numbered men, 74,600.”

This is a sampling of what is in this chapter as it goes through each tribe and the place that they are in reference to the tabernacle and who the leaders are and also how many men are in the army, that is 20 years and older.  The women and the children are not numbered.

Dr. Wiersbe writes in his commentary how the tribes would line up whenever the cloud would move saying that there had to be order in order for this to all work out to run smoothly.  “Whenever the camp moved, the ark of the covenant went before, carried by the priests.  Then the tribe of Judah, Issachar, and Zebulun marched next, followed by the Gershonites and Merarites carrying the tabernacle proper (frames, curtains, coverings).  Next came Reuben, Simeon and Gad, followed by the Kohathites carrying the tabernacle furnishings.  Ephraim, Manasseh, and Benjamin were next, while Dan, Asher and Naphtali brought up the rear.  The largest number of solders (186,400) led the way and the next largest (157,600) were the rear guard.”

I have never thought too much about how life would have been for Israel while the marched for the forty years in the wilderness, but all of their water and food was supplied for them by the Lord and they had a cloud to protect them from the heat in the day and a fire to warm them at night also provided by the Lord.  Each of the tribes had their own standard and there is subjection as to what they all were but the Scripture is silent about this.  This must have been an awesome sight to see and I am sure that it must have also been a frightful sight to see for those who would be Israel’s enemies.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Seeing that the ark of the covenant was the first to go out it meant that all of the people were following the Lord and that is what I want to do each day is to follow the Lord each day of my life.  The order that they had is also something that I would like very much in my life, but is lacking at this point.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Romans 12:1-2.
  2. Ephesians 6:10-17.
  3. Psalm 139:23-24.
  4. Proverbs 3:5-6.
  5. Philippians 4:11.

Memory verses for the week:                                  Romans 6:1-8

  1. What shall we say then?  Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
  2. May it never be!  How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
  3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
  4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
  5. For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
  6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
  7. for he who has died is freed from sin.
  8. Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
  9. knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, is never to die again; death no longer is master over Him.
