The Leaders Appointed (Num 1:4-16)

SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The leaders appointed

Message of the verses:                                        Reference:  Numbers 1:4-16

Message of the verses:  “4  "With you, moreover, there shall be a man of each tribe, each one head of his father’s household.  5  "These then are the names of the men who shall stand with you: of Reuben, Elizur the son of Shedeur;  6  of Simeon, Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai;  7  of Judah, Nahshon the son of Amminadab; 8  of Issachar, Nethanel the son of Zuar; 9  of Zebulun, Eliab the son of Helon; 10  of the sons of Joseph: of Ephraim, Elishama the son of Ammihud; of Manasseh, Gamaliel the son of Pedahzur; 11  of Benjamin, Abidan the son of Gideoni; 12  of Dan, Ahiezer the son of Ammishaddai; 13  of Asher, Pagiel the son of Ochran; 14  of Gad, Eliasaph the son of Deuel; 15  of Naphtali, Ahira the son of Enan.  16  "These are they who were called of the congregation, the leaders of their fathers’ tribes; they were the heads of divisions of Israel.’”

Sorcerer, the son of Aminadab, and prince of the children of Judah at the time of the first numbering of the tribes in the wilderness #Ex 6:23 His sister Elisheba was the wife of Aaron. He died in the wilderness #Nu 26:64,65 His name occurs in the Greek form Naasson in the genealogy of Christ #Mt 1:4 Lu 3:32.”  This is the note from the Easton Bible Dictionary on Nahshon.

Back in the book of Exodus when Moses’ father-in-law came to visit him he suggested that in order to keep the work load of Moses down that he appoint leaders in each of the tribes over thousands, hundreds and tens to help judge Israel with some of the smaller problems, so in this first numbering of Israel these men were already in place.  There would be other numberings that they would have to do in chapters two and seven.

It is interesting to follow the blood line of the Lord Jesus Christ as their names appear in different parts of the Bible.  I am not sure why Nahshon’s name in verse seven is called “Sorcerer” in the Easton Bible Dictionary.  Nahshon is mentioned in a number of passages in the Scriptures and this would lead me to believe that he was an important leader in the young nation of Israel.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  In both the OT and the NT there are lists of names, names of people who lived a long time ago, some of these people are now in heaven and some day they will received the rewards that have been promised to them.

As I think about all of these people from years past I know that God is in charge of when these people were born, who they were married too, or who they had children with, and so on down the line.  God, for His own reason, has chosen who will be in heaven from eternity past, and so that tells me that in order for these people to get to heaven they had to be born, along with all of the ones that will not be in heaven.  I am not saying that God has chosen people for hell for they will do that on their own by not accepting the forgiveness that is available to them through Jesus Christ and that is a tragedy.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Give myself to the Lord for service and worship today.
  2. Remember that I am dead to sin.
  3. Trust the Lord to teach me contentment.
  4. Remember to work on my memory verses.

Memory verses for the week:                                                                Romans 6:1-7

  1. What shall we say then?  Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
  2. May it never be!  How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
  3. Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
  4. Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
  5. For if we have become untied with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall also be in the likeness of His resurrection,
  6. knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, in order for our body of sin to be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves to sin;
  7. for he who has died is freed from sin.
