SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time                                        Focus:  The high priest’s sons

Bible Reading & Meditation                        Reference:  Leviticus 21:1-8

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  Then the LORD said to Moses, "Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: ‘No one shall defile himself for a dead person among his people, 2  except for his relatives who are nearest to him, his mother and his father and his son and his daughter and his brother, 3  also for his virgin sister, who is near to him because she has had no husband; for her he may defile himself.  4  ‘He shall not defile himself as a relative by marriage among his people, and so profane himself.  5  ‘They shall not make any baldness on their heads, nor shave off the edges of their beards, nor make any cuts in their flesh.  6  ‘They shall be holy to their God and not profane the name of their God, for they present the offerings by fire to the LORD, the food of their God; so they shall be holy.  7  ‘They shall not take a woman who is profaned by harlotry, nor shall they take a woman divorced from her husband; for he is holy to his God.  8  ‘You shall consecrate him, therefore, for he offers the food of your God; he shall be holy to you; for I the LORD, who sanctifies you, am holy.”

I have moved into a new chapter in Dr. Wiersbe’s book which he entitles, “The cost of Spiritual Leadership.”  The sub-title is called “Personal conduct,” and the section for today is on the “High Priest’s Sons.”

There are some similarities between the priests in the OT and the Pastors and Deacons in the NT, but not all is the same, however both are to be dedicated to the Lord and bring honor and glory to the Lord, and they are not to look upon their work as a burden to them, but a privilege to serve the Lord of Lords and the King of Kings.

The priests in the OT were had restrictions on whose funerals they could attend because of making them ceremonially unclean, and the lists are in the verses above.  They were not allowed to do things that were customs of the people who will live around them because they were to be separated from them in order to bring honor and glory to the Lord and to show other nations that they were indeed different in a good way.  The priests were also restricted on who they could marry as seen in verse seven.  God’s priests were to be holy and not profane the name of the Lord because they were offering up the sacrifices to the Lord.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  This may be a reoccurring theme in this section, but I am a priest of the Lord because I am a believer in the Lord Jesus Christ and have been saved from my sins through His blood.  I am allowed to come into the presence of the Lord and do not have to have someone else to do my bidding for me to the Lord, and with these rights come responsibilities too, and some of them are included in the responsibilities listed in the OT priests list.  I am to represent the Lord to unbelievers by telling them how they too can be saved, and then am to help them to grow in their new faith.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. I am to remember that privileges have responsibilities and that I am to be holy because the Lord is Holy.

Memory verses for the week:                                              Exodus 20:12-16

12.    Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.

13.    You shall not murder.

14.    You shall not commit murder.

15.    You shall not steal.

16.    You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.
