SPIRITUAL DIARY
My Worship Time Focus: Giving orders to number the soldiers
Bible Reading &
Meditation Reference: Numbers 1:1-3
Message of the verses: “1 ¶
Then the LORD spoke to Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of
meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year after they had
come out of the land of Egypt, saying, 2
"Take a census of all the congregation of the sons of Israel, by
their families, by their fathers’ households, according to the number of names,
every male, head by head 3 from twenty
years old and upward, whoever is able to go out to war in Israel, you and Aaron
shall number them by their armies.”
At this
time in my SD I am going to the first chapter of the book of Numbers to
continue. The first verse indicates that
the time was the first day of the second month, or thirteen months after God
led His children out of Egypt .
The Hebrews
have a couple of different names for the book of Numbers, one being “And He
Spoke,” as the phrase “Then the Lord Spoke (NASB). Another name is “Bemidbar,” and this means
“in the wilderness” for in the book of numbers the nation of Israel wandered
for forty years in the wilderness. I
guess that I like either one of those names better than “Numbers.”
The first
three verses speak of God telling Moses to number all of the males who are
twenty years or older, for all of them would be required to serve in the
Israeli army, as there was no volunteer army in Israel, and that is even true
today for all of the men and the women are required to serve in their
military. The reason that the Lord was
getting the military ready is that they were in hostel territory and would need
to be able to begin to fight. Dr.
Wiersbe points out that some denominations have taken hymns like “Onward
Christian Soldier” out of their hymnals because they do not like the fact that
the Bible records about war in certain parts.
The Lord was preparing the nation of Israel to go into the land of Canaan
to destroy those who live there because event though they had plenty of light
to understand that there is a God in heaven who expects a certain kind of
behavior from those whom He created, they did not live like that and so the
Lord was ready to destroy them. In
Genesis fifteen and verse sixteen God told Abram that his family would destroy
the Amorites in four hundred years but the reason that God did not destroy them
now was, “the iniquity of the Amorite is not yet complete.” It was complete not, yet because of Israel ’s sin it
would have to wait for forty more years.
Exodus 15:3 speaks of God being a warrior, and so those who think that
God is only love have not read the entire Bible, especially the part that
speaks of God’s justice.
Spiritual meaning for my life today: I know that I am in a Spiritual battle each
and every day of my life, for even though Jesus conquered the world, the flesh,
and the Devil I still have to battle against them for they do not realize that
the Lord has defeated them. Ephesians
chapter six speaks very clearly about this battle that all believers are
in.
My Steps of Faith for
Today:
- Give myself to the Lord for worship and service.
- Put on the whole armor of God.
- Realize the truth from Romans six that I am dead to sin.
- Continue to be taught and to learn contentment.
Memory verses for the week: Romans
6:1-7
- What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?
- May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?
- Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death?
- Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, so that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.
- For if we have been united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be in the likeness of His resurrection.
- knowing that our old self was crucified with Him, in order that our body of sin might be done away with, so that we would no longer be slaves of sin;
- for he who has died is freed from sin.
