SPIRITUAL DIARY

My Worship Time Focus:  The high priest offers the sin offering for the people

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Leviticus 16:7-10, 15-22

Message of the verses:  “7  And he shall take the two goats, and present them before the LORD at the door of the tabernacle of the congregation.  8  And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats; one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for the scapegoat.  9  And Aaron shall bring the goat upon which the LORD’S lot fell, and offer him for a sin offering.  10  But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the LORD, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.

“15 ¶  Then shall he kill the goat of the sin offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the vail, and do with that blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the mercy seat, and before the mercy seat:  16  And he shall make an atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions in all their sins: and so shall he do for the tabernacle of the congregation, that remaineth among them in the midst of their uncleanness.  17  And there shall be no man in the tabernacle of the congregation when he goeth in to make an atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made an atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the congregation of Israel.  18  And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make an atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about.  19  And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel.

20 ¶  And when he hath made an end of reconciling the holy place, and the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar, he shall bring the live goat:  21  And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions in all their sins, putting them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of a fit man into the wilderness:  22  And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land not inhabited: and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness.”

There are some very interesting points that are made in this section of Scripture.  The two goats are considered to be one sin offering, one would be killed and one would carry away the sins of the people into the wilderness never to be seen again.  The blood of the slain goat was also put on the mercy seat, and at the base of the mercy seat just as the blood of the bull, but then it was taken into the holy place and applied on the brazen altar in order to cleanse it.  The man who would take the scapegoat into the wilderness had to wash himself before he came into the camp again because that goat was part of the sin offering too.

There is no forgiveness of sin without the shedding of blood and that is why one of the goats had to die, however the scapegoat carried away the sins of the people never to be seen again.  John the baptizer said of Jesus, “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.”  The Psalmist wrote, “As far as the east is from the west, so far has He remover our transgressions from us.”  I am glade he said east from west and not north from south.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I must confess that there are far too many times when I take for granted this truth of Christ paying completely for my sins and they will never be brought up again.  I truly need to ask the Lord to forgive me for not thinking about this more often and give praise to the Lord for providing this way of having my sins forgiven and to be adopted into His family.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. I want to remember the process that it took in order to have my sins forgiven.  I believe that in partaking of the Lords Supper that I am to reflect on what Christ did for me on the cross in order to secure my salvation and then to look forward to the fact that He will be coming again in order to take me to heaven to be with Him forever.

Memory verses for the week:                                              Exodus 20:8-13

  1. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  2. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
  3. but the seventh day is a Sabbath of the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter, your male or female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
  4. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
  6. You shall not murder.
