An Afflicted People (Lev. 16:29 & 31)

SPIRITUAL DAIRY

My Worship Time                              Focus:  An afflicted people

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Lev. 16:29, 31

Message of the verses:  “29 ¶  "This shall be a permanent statute for you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls and not do any work, whether the native, or the alien who sojourns among you; 31  "It is to be a sabbath of solemn rest for you, that you may humble your souls; it is a permanent statute.”

The words in verse thirty-one that say, “you may humble your souls” is translated different in the KJV, it says “ye shall afflict your souls.”  The Day of Atonement was a Sabbath Day too, but it was different than the seventh day Sabbath day, for the difference is that the seventh day Sabbath was more of a festive time, while the Day of Atonement was a time to seriously look at oneself to see if there is any sin in one’s life that needed to be confessed to the Lord.  This affliction was also a time to look back at the time when the children of Israel were in the land of Egypt and being afflicted by the Egyptians, and also a time to look back at the time when Joseph was in prison being afflicted for something he did not do.

The fact that this was a Sabbath day and meant that the children of Israel did not do any work can be seen as a picture of being saved by grace through face, for it was all of God’s doing that one is saved:  “8  For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9  not as a result of works, so that no one may boast.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  Ephesians 2:8-9 are very meaningful verses to all believers, for in them they state that a person is saved by grace through faith and not from doing any work, but it is a gift from God, for otherwise someone would have something to boast about.  I am thankful for the truth of these verses.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. I am thankful for the free gift of salvation that God has given to me as a free gift and since I am now saved by grace through faith Ephesians 2:10 goes on to say that I now have work to do as a result of my salvation:  “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.”

Memory verses for the week:                                  Exodus 20:8-13

  1. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy.
  2. Six days you shall labor and do all your work,
  3. but the seventh day is a Sabbath for the Lord your God; in it you shall do no work, your or your son or your daughter, your male or your female servant or your cattle or your sojourner who stays with you.
  4. For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.
  5. Honor your father and mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
  6. You shall not commit murder.
