Grain Offering (Lev. 2:1-16; 6:14-23; 7:9-10)

My Worship Time           Focus:  The grain offering

Bible Reading & Meditation     Reference:  Lev. 2:1-16; 6:14-23; 7:9-10

Message of the verses:  “1 ¶  ‘Now when anyone presents a grain offering as an offering to the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it and put frankincense on it.  2  ‘He shall then bring it to Aaron’s sons the priests; and shall take from it his handful of its fine flour and of its oil with all of its frankincense. And the priest shall offer it up in smoke as its memorial portion on the altar, an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.  3  ‘The remainder of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons: a thing most holy, of the offerings to the LORD by fire.  4  ‘Now when you bring an offering of a grain offering baked in an oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers spread with oil.  5  ‘If your offering is a grain offering made on the griddle, it shall be of fine flour, unleavened, mixed with oil; 6  you shall break it into bits and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering.  7  ‘Now if your offering is a grain offering made in a pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil.  8  ‘When you bring in the grain offering which is made of these things to the LORD, it shall be presented to the priest and he shall bring it to the altar.  9  ‘The priest then shall take up from the grain offering its memorial portion, and shall offer it up in smoke on the altar as an offering by fire of a soothing aroma to the LORD.  10  ‘The remainder of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons: a thing most holy of the offerings to the LORD by fire.

11 ¶  ‘No grain offering, which you bring to the LORD, shall be made with leaven, for you shall not offer up in smoke any leaven or any honey as an offering by fire to the LORD.  12  ‘As an offering of first fruits you shall bring them to the LORD, but they shall not ascend for a soothing aroma on the altar.  13  ‘Every grain offering of yours, moreover, you shall season with salt, so that the salt of the covenant of your God shall not be lacking from your grain offering; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.  14  ‘Also if you bring a grain offering of early ripened things to the LORD, you shall bring fresh heads of grain roasted in the fire, grits of new growth, for the grain offering of your early ripened things.  15  ‘You shall then put oil on it and lay incense on it; it is a grain offering.  16  ‘The priest shall offer up in smoke its memorial portion, part of its grits and its oil with all its incense as an offering by fire to the LORD.

“14 ¶  ‘Now this is the law of the grain offering: the sons of Aaron shall present it before the LORD in front of the altar.  15  ‘Then one of them shall lift up from it a handful of the fine flour of the grain offering, with its oil and all the incense that is on the grain offering, and he shall offer it up in smoke on the altar, a soothing aroma, as its memorial offering to the LORD.  16  ‘What is left of it Aaron and his sons are to eat. It shall be eaten as unleavened cakes in a holy place; they are to eat it in the court of the tent of meeting.  17  ‘It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their share from My offerings by fire; it is most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering.  18  ‘Every male among the sons of Aaron may eat it; it is a permanent ordinance throughout your generations, from the offerings by fire to the LORD. Whoever touches them will become consecrated.’"  19  Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, 20  "This is the offering which Aaron and his sons are to present to the LORD on the day when he is anointed; the tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular grain offering, half of it in the morning and half of it in the evening.

21  "It shall be prepared with oil on a griddle. When it is well stirred, you shall bring it. You shall present the grain offering in baked pieces as a soothing aroma to the LORD.  22  "The anointed priest who will be in his place among his sons shall offer it. By a permanent ordinance it shall be entirely offered up in smoke to the LORD.

23  "So every grain offering of the priest shall be burned entirely. It shall not be eaten.’

“9  ‘Likewise, every grain offering that is baked in the oven and everything prepared in a pan or on a griddle shall belong to the priest who presents it.  10  ‘Every grain offering, mixed with oil or dry, shall belong to all the sons of Aaron, to all alike.”

There were five forms in which the meal offering could be offered to the Lord.  These five forms were as follows:  1. fine flower; 2. oven-baked cakes; 3. cakes baked in a pan; 4. cakes baked in a frying pan (on a griddle); and 5. crushed heads of new grain.

In all but one of these sacrifices the remainder of the sacrifice would be eaten in a special holy place in the tabernacle by the priests.  None of the sacrifices that were eaten by the priests would have honey or yeast in them.

These grain offerings would have incense added to them and burned on the altar which represents prayers.  The grain represents the produce given by God from the land so when Jesus prayed “give us this day our daily bread” He may have been referring to this meal offering with the incense added to it.

Meal offerings were to be offered along with a blood sacrifice and this shows that without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness of sins.  The meal offering represented the work of the giver of the sacrifice but the blood sacrifice represented the forgiveness that come from God.

The meal offering or grain offering represented Jesus Christ as the bread of life as found in John 6:32ff.  The offering had to be accompanied by oil which represents the Holy Spirit of God who was given to Christ without measure, (John 3:34).  The sacrifice had to contain salt which represented the pureness of Jesus Christ.

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I have always wanted to study the OT sacrifices so that I could understand how they were a picture of Jesus Christ and I am learning this as I go through these OT sacrifices in the book of Leviticus.  I am thankful for the Lord Jesus Christ who sacrificed Himself for me and became sin for me so that I could receive His righteousness and forgiveness of sin and then go to heaven to be with Him for eternity.

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Be thankful for the gift of salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ being God’s perfect sacrifice for my sins.
  2. Put on my spiritual armor.
  3. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  4. Trust the Lord to teach me contentment.

Memory verses for the week:                      A review of Exodus 20:1-6

  1. Then God spoke all these words, saying,
  2. I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery.
  3. You shall have no other gods before Me.
  4. You shall not make for yourself an idol, or any likeness of what is in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the water under the earth.
  5. You shall not worship them or serve them; for I, the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children, on the third and forth generations of those who hate me,
  6. but showing lovingkindness to thousands, to those who love me and keep my commandments.
