The Trespass Offering (Lev. 5:14-6:27 & 7:1-10)

My Worship Time           Focus:  The trespass offering

Bible Reading & Meditation               Reference:  Exodus 5:14-6:17; 7:1-10

Message of the verses:  In different versions of the Bible the trespass offering is called the guilt offering and so in this SD I will be calling it the guilt offering.

The guilt offering was needed for two kinds of sins, one against “the holy things of the Lord” which can be seen in Leviticus 5:15.  “15  "If a person acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally against the LORD’S holy things, then he shall bring his guilt offering to the LORD: a ram without defect from the flock, according to your valuation in silver by shekels, in terms of the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering.”  The second sin the guilt offering was for was a sin against one’s neighbor and that can be seen in Leviticus 6:2-3:  “2  "When a person sins and acts unfaithfully against the LORD, and deceives his companion in regard to a deposit or a security entrusted to him, or through robbery, or if he has extorted from his companion, 3  or has found what was lost and lied about it and sworn falsely, so that he sins in regard to any one of the things a man may do.”

Those were the sins and now I will look at the ritual on how this sacrifice was to be offered.  The first process is to confession of the sin and this can be seen in Numbers 5:6-7 “6  "Speak to the sons of Israel, ‘When a man or woman commits any of the sins of mankind, acting unfaithfully against the LORD, and that person is guilty, 7  then he shall confess his sins which he has committed, and he shall make restitution in full for his wrong and add to it one-fifth of it, and give it to him whom he has wronged.”  Dr. Wiersbe writes this about true repentance:  “True repentance will always bring with it a desire for restitution.  We will want to make things right with God and with those whom we’ve sinned against.  Forgiveness comes only because of the death of an innocent substitute.  Isaiah 53:10 speaks of the Lord Jesus Christ being a guilt offering, “But the LORD was pleased to crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering, He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.”  The guilt offering was to be a bull and that bull must be worth the damage that was done and then twenty percent was added to it, for it was very costly to commit sin.

This is the end of the first chapter in Dr. Wiersbe’s book on Leviticus and he ends this chapter with a paragraph on how these sacrifices were a picture of Jesus Christ and what He did for me, a believer in Him.  “Jesus provides all that we need.  He is our burnt offering, and we must yield ourselves wholly to Him.  He is our meal offering, the seed crushed and put through the fire, that we might have the bread of life; and we must feed upon Him.  He is our drink offering who poured Himself out in sacrifice and service, and we must pour ourselves out for Him and for others.  He is our fellowship offering, making life a joyful feast instead of a painful famine.  He is our sin offering and our guilt offering, for He bore our sins on His body, “and He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, so that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His wounds you were healed.” And He paid the full price for our sins, “8  knowing that you were not redeemed with perishable things like silver or gold from your futile way of life inherited from your forefathers, but with precious blood, as of a lamb unblemished and spotless, the blood of Christ.”  (1 Peter 2:24 & 1:18-19)

“The nation of Israel had to offer six different sacrifices in order to have a right relationship with God, but Jesus Christ ‘offered one sacrifice for the sins forever’ (Hebrews 10:12) and took care of our sin problem completely.”

Spiritual meaning for my life today:  I know that I have a new way of looking at what it cost Jesus Christ to pay for my sins in His own body on the cross.  The age that I live in has things all messed up for it has a problem when any animal is killed, yet it has no problem eating the food that comes from those animals that are killed for their food.  It has no problem at all when a mother chooses to kill her unborn baby.  How would this generation handle the sacrificing of animals such as was done in the OT days, and will again be done during the tribulation days.

Isaiah 53:10, the verse that is quoted in this SD says that it pleased God to “crush Him.”  That word in the Hebrew means to break into pieces and that is what pleased God to do to Jesus Christ.  Why?  Well the rest of the verse explains the why, “He will see His offspring, He will prolong His days, And the good pleasure of the LORD will prosper in His hand.”  Jesus Christ did this for me and He also did it to receive the honor and Glory for His Father as He was doing His Fathers will.  He did this because of His great love that He has for His children, not wanting them to perish.  Halleluiah What A Savior!!

My Steps of Faith for Today:

  1. Praise the Lord for His sacrifice that He has given for me.
  2. Live a life that is pleasing to the Lord.
  3. Give myself to the Lord today for service and worship.
  4. Trust the Lord to guide my path today.
  5. Put on my spiritual armor.
